Losing No. 1
In the 11 years of the Maryland Associated Press football state rankings, 19 teams held the No. 1 ranking, only to lose it during the season.
One team lost a share of the No. 1 ranking (DeMatha, 1999) when it tied a ballgame. Another team (Seneca Valley, 1992) was voted out of No. 1 without losing. The other 17 teams lost games, and with it the No. 1 ranking. Only once (Sherwood, 1996) has a team lost the No. 1 ranking, only to regain the top spot at season's end.
