Attacking, Set Plays # 10 - Corners.

Corners. The attacking team has possession of the ball, and are in their pre-arranged positions for a corner kick. It is up to the team to support the corner; 4 players are needed in the 6 yard box. Attacker 2 is at the near post. The job for this player is to move towards the ball and flick the ball across the goal, if it is low in flight. Attacker 2 should be tall and able to perform well under physical pressure. Attacker 3 positions is near to the goal line inside the near post. By standing on the goal line, Attacker 3 blocks the goalkeepers view from the ball. When the kick is taken, Attacker 3 moves out towards the edge of the 6 yard box, where Attacker 3 can attack any ball entering the area below bar height. This may entail Attacker 3 to move out and then in again to the goal line. By moving out and in from the goal line, Attacker 3 is more likely to create space for him or herself than if he/she would be by standing still. Attacker 3 must be tall and a good header of the ball. From time to time, Attacker 3 will head for a goal. But often it would be better if Attacker 3 heads across the goal to the area of the far post. Attacker 4 job is similar but he/she starts from the back half of the goal. Attacker 4 move to the edge of the 6 yard box when the kick is taken. This will (should) allow Attacker 4 to watch the ball all the time. If the ball is flicked on, Attacker 4 should be looking to attack it. Attacker 5 job is critical. Attacker 5 attacks the prime scoring area by the far post. If the ball is flicked on by a teammate, or deflects off a defender, it is likely to drop invitingly into the far post area for scoring chance. Be careful not to be off-side if the corner kick is partially cleared. Attacker 6 is on the far side of the penalty area, ready to attack the far post. Attacker 7 is near the edge of the penalty area looking to attack the mid-goal area just out side the six yard box. Attackers 8 and 9 hold their position at the edge of the penalty area to pick up any rebounds or partial clearances. It is best if Attacker 7 and 8 are good volleyers of the ball.

Things to remember to gain more set plays. (best option first)
1. Pass the ball to the back of the defense.
2. Cross the ball to the back of the defense.
3. Dribbling in the attacking third of the field.
4. Pressuring defenders in the attacking third of the field.
5. Shooting at goal in the attacking third of the field.

Remember: 53% of all goals come from moves that start in the attacking third of the field.

Remember:
1. 72% of all goals are from one touch.
2. 22% of all goals are from the area of the far post.
3. 22% of all goals are from headers.

4. 17% of all goals are from volleys.
5. 16% of all goals are from outside the penalty area.
