Dr. Percy Lavon Julian, son
of a railway mail clerk and a schoolteacher, a grandson of slaves,
seemed destined for greatness. Julian exhibited the positive
attributes of courage, tenacity, scholarship, industry, and
business keenness--characteristics that molded a pioneer and
a role model for future researchers in chemistry. His research at
the Glidden Company resulted in the development of a process to
derive cortisone from a base of soybean oil. Julian's pioneering
work with the protein-rich soybean was of enormous use in seeking
a solution to the worldwide problem of protein deficiency.
