CraigR wonders if the ordinary pencil can offer something to the multimedia curriculum?
AlexanderK: Oh, yeas, Craig!
KarenJM: But multimedia is also another benefit to EXPRESSION.
JeffC: Actually... 10 dead bugs on a poster board are a little lumpier.
JuliaL: Some parents think that technology is just about the internet or chatting which many studnets last for more thatn two hours.
DavidAC: They don't see any other future that is agriculture
CraigR: lol
AlexanderK: The pencil, afterall, is a form of technology...
VictoriaF: yeah, more 'real'
KevanN: the traditional way no longer computes with what is going on in the real world - tradition is defined by the reality of what is currently acceptable practice
KarenJM: Hmm....
AlexanderK: So, let students chat. Let them make their own rules, their own culture. They learn from interactions with one another....
NancyLA: Parents need to learn that the world is growing smaller with all these means of communication.
KarenJM: And they develop better writing skills...
KrisW: Good point Karen
KarenJM: Nancy yes = global village
DavidAC: How would the Administration see this
KevanN: Craig, look for Ken Veith's Bood - From the Ordinary to the Extraordinary for an interesting take on the pencil
CraigR: looking at the time and wanting ot give everyone a chance to summarize their views I have one last question for us to consider
CraigR: How does multimedia help to promote visual literacy?
AlexanderK: Yes, the world IS getting smaller, and so, it's important that students learn about one another... different cultures, etc. Chatting...
CraigR: I have that book Kevan
JuliaL: That is what we wnt our studndets to see what s the real world about especially for those stuendts who are poor and don't have the opportunities to travel or own a television.
KevanN: remember the cover?
BretBi: Another CD I found this summer is http://www.project-approach.com/resources/cd1.htm
KarenJM: WE have kids draw in sketchbooks then manipulate on the computer. Kids are very adept at switching from medium to medium. something we could all learn from.
KevanN: morphing pencil = hi tech
NancyLA: Kids adapt quickly.
FrankGuest12: A good teacher would demonstrate, for example, the constructed nature of media, using a multi media approach.
KrisW: Visual literacy is improved with more access to images and critical thinking about those images.
KarenJM: FRank, give an example. I'm interested in this idea. How so?
KrisW: Technology provides the access, teachers provide the critical thinking skills.
KevanN: Visual literacy really does need to be improved - getting away from pink flamingos in the yard, for example...
JuliaL: the teachers and the support of the district is what we need
CraigR: we need to wrap things up here everyone.
FrankGuest12: Perhaps the design of an advertisement might demonstrate that words, images and lay out are as important as the publication and its audience.
AlexanderK: Many multimedia forms are visual based (and text based as well-- which helps promote literacy!) These technologies help children understand about the exterior world...
CraigR: SO. . .as much as I hate to stop the conversation
DavidAC: particularly the district
CraigR: we need to
FrankGuest12: Please look at my media literacy website for more examples: www.med.sc.edu/medialit
KevanN: calls the group to order!
