JOHN4 SCROGGINS (JOSEPH3, JOHN2, GEORGE1 SCROGGIN)10 was born November 13, 1743 in Somerset County, Maryland11, and died December 14, 1812 in Woodford County, Kentucky, USA12. He married EUNICE JANE POLK13 176714,15, daughter of JOHN POLK and SARAH VAUGHAN. Notes for JOHN SCROGGINS: from book, Polk Family and Kinsmen, p. 158 In the fall of 1793, Capt. Scroggin and family emigrated to Kentucky with several kinsmen -- Ephraim Polk, 3d, the Morrises, Nutters, Coverdales and others. p. 159 Chapter LIV Polk-Scroggin kinship On the arrival of Capt. John Scroggin and Eunice Jane (Polk) Scroggin, his wife, in Kentucky in the fall of 1793, they established themselves on a fine farm in Bourbon County, about twelve miles fromCynthiana. There they lived, prospered, raised their children and died, and their bodies were interred in the family burying ground on the farm. It is said that Capt. Scroggin brother, Samuel, accompanied by Ephraim Polk, 3d, and several others from Sussex, had previously come to Kentucky (in 1786) to view the land and fix on locations for their respective families. When they came in 1793, they fixed their homes not far apart, some locating in Bourbon and some in Woodford County. John and Samuel Scroggin settled in what is now Harrison -- then a part of Bourbon -- and Robert and other brothers in Woodford County. All the related families that came -- the Scroggins, Nutters, Polks, and Morrises -- brought with them, from Delaware, slaves and live stock. p. 160 The seven Scroggin brothers were all over six feet in height and all were officers in the Revolution. They seemed to inherit the religious tendencies of their mother (Sarah Caldwell), who was of a French Huguenot family, grafted onto Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. Her descendants generally followed the latter faith. Notes for DAVID BEDFORD BROWN: From _The Nelson Brown Genealogy of the United States_ by Gladys Nelson Bremer, Lawrence, KS, 1960. Quoting the _History of Monroe and Shelby Co., Mo._, Pub. by National History Co., St. Louis, 1884 Obituary of: Bedford Brown, - - died at his residence in this county, on the 20th of October, 1876, in the fifty-seventh year of his age. This brief announcement marks the close of a userful and well spent, unmarred from the beginning to the end by a breath of reproach. To thus have lived is to have triumphed over life and was a victory over the grave. For such, the reward of the future cannot be doubted. And it is a reward as lasting and as precious as the conscience of God. To the flesh it may be more gratifying to strut out our brief period in this world, to exhibit our gaudy feathers in bright noonday sun and thus attract the envy of those as empty-headed as we thus prove ourselves to be. But to the man or woman of conscience of soul, of sober, sturdy intelligence, nothing could be less enviable than such vanity. To live right, to live plain and honestly, to do ones duty in life faithfully and well and to keep ever before our eyes the laws of humanity and the laws of God, observing them in all things dutifully and with an earnest free will, is the truest and best mission of man. - - It was thus that Bedford Brown lived and it was such a life as this that he left behind him when he died. - - Born in the state of Kentucky Feb. 25, 1820, while yet early in youth, he was brought to Missouri by his parents, Judge Levin Brown and his wife, nee a Miss Mary Kidd, who removed to this state and resided for a time in Marion Co. The family subsequently removed to Shelby County and here Mr. Browns father, Judge Brown became a prosperous and highly respected citizen. He served for some years as Judge of the County Court. And was otherwise a leading man in the community. Bedford Brown, deceased, was reared partly in Kentucky and partly in this state. And was brought up by his father to steady habits of industry and sober frugality and honesty. He learned the great lesson that if one wishes to succeed in life honestly, he can succeed only by preserving industry. He too became a farmer and became quite well-to-do. He left a good farm at his death of nearly 300 acres. His life was one of unbroken industry and upright citizenship. An energetic farmer, a law-abiding intelligent citizen, a kind and highly esteemed neighbor, and an affectionate, faithful husband and father. He died in the full faith of the Redeemer, being at the time of his death and for years before, an accepted and exemplary communicant in the Missionary Baptist Church. He left a family consisting of his widow and ten children. The children are as follows: Anna E., wife of Henry Nicol Alexander John, who is married and lives in Vernon County Lucinda E., wife of James A. Nelson, Knox Co. Benjamin F., who with his brother Alexander, has charge of the farm. Julia, the wife of James Gentry, Rolls County Mary E., at home Lillie, at home, Kitty E. and Joseph B., at home. Mrs. Brown, the mother of these, was a Miss Elizabeth Todd before her marriage. A daughter of William and Eleander (Andrews) Todd, who came to this county from Maryland in 1838. She was married in Sept., 1849. Two of her children, besides these mentioned are deceased. James A., the eldest, and Alice, the third daughter. Mrs. Brown is also a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. More About ELIZABETH ANN TODD: Relocations: 1838, Maryland to Missouri69 iii. EDMONIA BROWN70, b. August 24, 182171; d.
