1 Prior Scroggins (53), (ca 1797-ca 1833)
+ Mary (Polly)1 Tatum (54), (ca 1804, m. 1820)  Anderson Scroggins was born sometime between November 1826 and May 1827. probably in the area around the northeast corner of Madison county, IL, or the adjacent southeast corner of what is now Macoupin County. His parents were Prior Scroggins (ca. 1797-1833) and Mary Ann 'Polly' Tatum, ca. 1802-after 1860.

Anderson first appears in a record when he was mustered into the army at Jefferson Barracks, MO, 12 Jun 1846.  He was mustered out at Now Orleans, 28 May 1847.  I have not been able to find him anywhere in the 1850 census.

Anderson married Ellen Gaskill in Bond County, IL, 22 Nov 1855.  They had Julian Elbert 'Bert' Scroggins who was probably born in the same area as Anderson on 12 Sep 1856.  Ellen died after childbirth, in autumn, but it is unclear what year.  It may have been after Bert's birth, but there is some evidience of a second son, Luther, born later.

Anderson and his mother apparently accompanied Anderson's sister Malinda Scroggins Webb and her family, and possibly another sibling, to Kansas at the end of the 1850s or in very early 1860.  The Webbs remained in Kansas, but Anderson and his mother returned to Illinois later in 1860.  Along the way, Anderson married Catherine Bachelor in Boonville,  Cooper County, MO, 31 Oct 1860.  I have not been able to find Anderson or his mother in the 1860 census, but Catherine was enumerated in Kansas with other members of her family.

Anderson owned property in Richwood Township, Jersey County, IL, on 1 Aug 1864.  He enlisted in the army for the Civil War and was mustered in at Alton, IL, 15 Sep 1864.  Daughter Mathilda was born in Alton, 6 Jan 1865.  Anderson was mustred out at Springfiled, IL, 14 Jul 1865.  The 1865 state census has him living in Alton.

Sometime while Anderson was off in the army, Bert ran away from home .  After being rejected by his mother's family, he went to live with his father's aunt, Minerva Scroggins Sawyer on a farm near Wilsonville in Macoupin County.

Son Willaim Anderson Scroggins was born 6 Mar 1868, place unknown.

Anderson and family were enumerated in the 1870 census in Buffalo Township, near Louisiana, Pike County, MO.  Catherine had relatives in that area.

Son John Pryor Scroggins was born in Litchfield, Montogomery County, IL, 1 May 1874.

At the time of the 1880 census, Anderson was living, away from his family, with a woman named Mary Wright and her three children, including a daugheter named Julia, in Mississipi Township, Jersey County, IL.

The 1885 Iowa state census has entries for Anserson Scroggins, age 50, widowed, wood chopper, and Julia Scroggins, age 17, single, in Muscatine County, IA, as of 1 Jun 1885.

Anderson died of apoplexy, 12 Aug 1885, at the County Poor Farm, Union Township near Burlington, Des Moines County, IA.  The site is currently the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant.
