Second Grade
Field Trip a Success!
We had a very good field trip for the 2nd grade to the Environmental
Film Festival at the Rock Creek Nature Center on March 17, although
the weather was not promising. Discovery Creek Museum treated us
to another excellent outing. Thanks to Joanne Dann (who arranged
our invitation), Margaret Greene, her English houseguest, and Linda
Seder in joining me as chaperones. We look forward to more field
trips next school year, and welcome chaperones.
Read Aloud
Program Report
We've had another good year in the read-aloud program, where a loyal
group of about 10 readers has read to all of the classes at the
MLK School at least once. Some readers have gone back to the same
classroom repeatedly and have developed a great rapport with the
students and teachers.
Read Aloud:
Peggy Christie, Tracey Coates, Mary Douglas Dick, Robin Fernkas,
Susan Goodman, Liz Gregg, Andrea Kane, Polly Krieger, Jane Nutter,
ML Wagner
Thank you
for volunteering your time at MLK!
Many thanks are in order to all those who gave generously of their
time to make our first year at MLK, Jr. such a successful one. Dr.
Baylor, the principal, and Ms. Hawkins, the assistant principal,
have always been available to us and have done everything in their
power to make our efforts effective. Last fall, Ruth Simmons' visit
to the school and Margaret's recognition from Smith for her work
on this project demonstrated the importance the college attaches
to our work.
In December,
we received a grant of just over $2000 from the Florence J. Carlile
Fund to purchase attractive paperback books for beginning readers.
Again, this year, Crocky Hogg has done a marvelous job of soliciting
and then counting all those Apples for Students receipts from Giant
Supermarkets. Next year, we hope to get more of you signed up for
the electronic Safeway program.
An outstanding
student we identified from Ketcham School has been admitted to Georgetown
Day School. And, most importantly, an increasing number of volunteers
have donated many hours at the school to tutor and read aloud to
classes, and have had a good deal of fun in the process! We hope
more volunteers will join us in the Fall so we can spend more time
reading to all the children. For information contact Andrea Kane
at 202-544-1516.
