News and notes for Summer, 2000:
Connect with Current Smithies - Provide Housing or Jobs for Smith Interns!
Do you have an extra room, a basement apartment, or an internship you would like to offer to a Smith student next year? Each year current Smith students who come to Washington for the Picker and Smithsonian internship programs are faced with the daunting, and expensive task of finding their own housing. The Picker interns also have to find full-time political/public policy internships for the months of June-December. Housing is the most formidable hurdle - interns want to find safe, affordable and convenient housing that will make their Washington semester a success. In the past, area Alumnae have offered extra rooms, basement apartments or other rental properties for reasonable rents; or discounted rents in return for babysitting/house sitting; and some generous alumnae offer free housing. Interns are especially interested in locations that allow them to walk to the Metro or other easy public transportation, as well as other amenities like grocery stores.
Twelve students will need housing beginning in June through December and another 12 need housing September through December. This is a tremendous opportunity to connect with the energy of current Smith students, and to provide a great service to the College. You can't imagine how much it would mean to a student with limited resources who is faced with finding short-term, furnished apartments in a town with a nearly zero vacancy rate. You can even make a little money yourself! If you have housing or an internship to offer, please contact the Washington Alumna Coordinator, Jane Riley Jacobsen ('90). e-mail: jane@ned.org
