Scandia D.C.

Fiddlers and other musicians in the Washington D.C. area who are interested in playing Scandinavian dance music TAKE NOTE

The Scandia D.C. Spelmannslag (Musician Group) continues again this season. We are looking for musicians who are interested in playing Scandinavian dance music (primarily Swedish and Norwegian). If you already play Scandinavian music on a fiddle or other instrument (e.g. guitar, accordion, bass, flute, recorder, or make us an offer!) please consider joining us. Experienced musicians who play in another style and would like to learn and play Scandinavian style music for dancing are also invited. The group meets the 3rd Saturday of each month from 7:00 - 8:00 pm in the Senior Classroom at the Greenbelt Community Center. It is led by the fiddler featured at the Scandia D.C. 3rd Saturday evening dance. After the hour practice session, the group (led by the featured fiddler) plays a set for the Scandia D.C. 3rd Saturday dance from 8:00 - 8:30 pm. A small fee ($3) is charged to cover the cost of the room rental.

The Spelmannslag works from a specific repertoire that is distributed in both CD form (for Vol. I, II, III, IV, V and VI) and sheet music form (for Vol. I, II, IV, V and VI only). These will be made available to members of the Spelemannslag only for a nominal price ($5 per CD, $3 per Vol. of sheet music). Each month four tunes are studied and four tunes are assigned as homework for the next month's meeting. You will be able to practice the dance tunes from the CD and sheet music in between monthly practice sessions. Don't miss this opportunity to work with the Washington area's finest Scandinavian musicians, and enjoy the energy and vitality that comes from playing for dancers.
