from a book of Irish heraldry and ancestry: O'REGAN
"Regan is listed among the hundred most numerous Irish
surnames: it holds sixty-sixth place ...at the present time. Fifty years
ago few bearers of the name made use of their prefix O, but it has been
resumed by many families and the voters' lists, directories etc., now indicate
that nearly forty per cent are listed as O'Regan. Like most of the widespread
Irish surnames O'Regan originated independently in more than one place.
As regards origin, the more important of these was O Riagain of Counties
Meath and Dublin, one of the Four Tribes of Tara, and very prominent in
the wars against the so-called Danes. They were dispersed after the Anglo-Norman
invasion and their descendants have largely disappeared except in Co. Leix,
to which area they migrated. The other O'Regan sept, Dalcassian in origin,
descends from Riagan, nephew of the famous Brian Boru: they were seated
in the Limerick area of Thomond. In modern times Regans and O'Regans are
found more in Co. Cork than in Co. Limerick. Fineen MacCarthy, writing in
1595, claims several families of O'Regan, living in Carbery, as his kinsmen.
Keating, Terry and other seventeenth century authorities state that some
families in Co. Limerick stem from the Co. Leix O'Regans; and it is a fact
that the arms borne by families located in both those areas are the same.
Riagan being pronounced Reegan, the tendency in speech to call it Raigan
(it is even spelt O Raogain in Co. Waterford Irish-speaking districts) can
only be explained by the influence of the written word Regan (cf. Egan correctly
pronounced locally Aigan).
While there have been surprisingly few outstanding figures in Irish life
called Regan, two are worthy of individual mention: Maurice O'Regan who
wrote a contemporary account of the Anglo-Norman invasion under Strongbow;
and Teige O'Regan, the faithful follower of James II, who greatly distinguished
himself at the siege of Limerick.
("Authors note: it has been alleged that Teague
Riggin of Somerset Co. Md had some relation to Sir Teige O'Regan, follower
and soldier for King James II. This may or may not be true, but I have never
seen a specific reference material that shows this or any other absolute
proof to date." R. A. Riggin)![]()
he Golden Lyon
was a tract of land in early Somersett County, Maryland purchased
by one of my original ancestors in this country, Teague Riggin [c.1666].
He apparently had two brothers, Darby Riggin, who settled in Accomack Co.,
Va., and very likely a younger brother, John Riggin. Teague Riggin's son
was dubbed "John Riggin of Marumsco", probably to distinguish
him from his uncle or his cousin. The Riggin brothers likely emigrated from
Ireland. All known evidence says Teague was the patriarch of this family,
though there is recently aquired evidence that states Teague's brother,
Darby, entered Somerset Co. before 1682 with three sons, but does not appear
they took up residence there. The Golden
Lyon became Teague's "Home Plantation." The family's
other scattered tracts, surrounding lands such as Lyon's Whelp,
Riggin's Mines, Riggin's Content, Hilliard's Discovery, Teague's Down, Seaman's
Choice, Father and Mother's Gift, Ambrosia, Middle Plantation, What you
will, to name a few, comprised of close to two thousand acres in the
areas near what is now known as Crisfield, Marion, Shelltown and Rehobeth,
Maryland. Later tracts were further inland towards the Pocomoke River, up
Dividing Creek and even into what became Worcester Co., as the family grew
and migrated north and east on the peninsula.

MD by 1665 Born around 1618, he arrived in America before 1641, and was among the first settlers of Gravesend, Long Island, where he made several land purchases and contracted to have a house built. In 1653, Ambrose petitioned for a pass to go to Virginia, and in JUN 1659 he was in Northampton County with his wife. Apparently, he was back on Long Island by 1661, when he gave a note for the purchase of a house and plantation on the North River. In 1663/4, he was back in Northampton County, Virginia again, in trouble with the court for his non-conformist behavior. The Northampton Grand Jury charged him "for not coming to church and being brought before the court demeaned himself insolently and appeared under the notion of a Quaker" and fined him 1000 lbs of tobacco "for Sabbathbreaking and his said Insolent behavior." In 1665, Ambrose and his family came to the Annemessex section of Somerset County, Maryland, where he became a prominent planter and landowner. He was very active in the county's civil and military affairs and was commonly referred to as "Major". He was a Justice of the Peace in 1683, and was elected to the Lower House of the Maryland General Assembly in JAN 1671, though there is no evidence that he took his seat. Ambrose died prior to NOV 1706. In 1641, he married Mary CORNISH, b.16-- Gravesend, L.I., New Amsterdam (N.Y.) d. Somerset Co. MD, daughter of John CORNISH of Flatlands, Long Island.

1.1. RIGGIN, John b. Ireland q.v. c 1640/45 m. 4 Jan 1672, Anne DAVIS Somerset Co by Rev. Robert Maddox Somerset Co. Land Records Liber 17 f 383
John and his wife Ann seem to disappear from the records, unless his wife Ann died and he remarried. Thus far it has been impossible to prove John Riggin who married Mary Ward was not the son of Teague Sr. but one the sons of his brother Darby or John. Darby had sons John, Nathaniel and Jonathan after 1688/9 and before 1681 when he entered a warrant in Somerset Co. for their transportation along with his daughter Mary and wife Elizabeth. He apparently had been living in Va. prior to his transportaion into the Province. Yet there does not seem to be any record of any land, court or other records in Somerset Co. stating that he stayed in the area to live. and Some have speculated John Riggin Sr. and his wife Ann, went back to London, according to the London Census of 1700, living there was a John Riggin son of John Riggin Sr. and his wife Ann. It is possible that the John Riggin family that lived, and lives today in the Crisfield are specifically the descendants of John Riggin, Sr. and not Teagues son John Riggin Sr. of Marumsco. It has also been noted that John Riggin Sr. of Marumsco, may have been given this title to distinguish himself from his Uncle. By all indications, Teague Riggin is still the patriarch of this entire branch of the Riggin family in the United States. No evidence whatsoever, has show that his brother John had any children in Somerset Co., or anywhere on the eastern shore, unlike Teague's family which is proven by countless Somerset Co. documents. A Jesse Riggen shows up as a grandson on the will for a John Riggen in 1776 from Somerset Co., MD. John's wife was named Jemimah. John had a son John, as well. I have found a John Riggen living in Mason Co., KY during the same time that Jesse was living in Nicholas Co. Jesse died around 1835-1836 in Nicholas Co., at least the will was probated in 1836. Jesse had a son Jesse who I think may have died in 1838 in Nicholas Co. Jesse also had a daughter Mary who married a Joshua Selby who was also from MD and they eventually moved to Missouri. -Herb Hill, 09 Aug 1997

But due to the lack of sources and footnotes, much is to be scutinized. Among other speculation, in the idea Teague Riggin was the son of Tadge Reagh O'Dowd, of which I have never seen a solid piece of evidence to support this. Not to say this could not be true, but at this point unproven. Most of the information extracted from this book, printed in this document, has been verified with other primary sources. i.e. Somesret Co. Land, Chancery, Orphans Court, Deed, and Will records.
