Diet Help: What is Phentermine?
PHENTERMINE HYDROCHLORIDE
Phentermine hydrochloride comes in immediate release or time release formulas. Immediate release pills release into your system as soon as you take them, and time release capsules release the medication into your body over an extended period of time, generally 8 or 12 hours. There are many brand names of phentermine hydrochloride, and even more generic versions. The most popular brand name of phentermine is Adipex-P.
ADIPEX-P: Adipex-P is a 37.5 mg immediate release version of phentermine hydrochloride. It is white with blue specks. The pill is oblong, scored on one side, and labeled ADIPEX-P on the reverse. The most popular generic of Adipex-P made by Camall Company, is white with blue specks and is also oblong.

PHENTERMINE RESIN
Ionamin is phentermine set in resin. This compound releases slowly into the system, but is not timed release per se. Some patients like it because they have fewer side effects, some do not,
generally because they do not think it is as effective.
IONAMIN: Ionamin is the only phentermine resin on the market; there are no generics. It comes in 30 mg and 15 mg capsules. The 15 mg capsule is gray and yellow, the 30 mg capsule is all yellow. Each capsule is labeled "Ionamin".

ISN'T PHENTERMINE AN AMPHETAMINE?
Phentermine is a sympathetic amine, classified as an anorectic medication. Although phentermine is a stimulant, it is not classified as an amphetamine. Amphetamines have much greater abuse potential because they work primarily on dopamine receptors.
DOES PHENTERMINE SPEED UP MY METABOLISM?
Phentermine DOES have some thermogenic effect. What this means in plain English, is that it speeds up your metabolism. This effect lasts long after you feel any other effects from the medication. However, the thermogenic effect of phentermine and any other currently available obesity medications is minor compared to the effect on appetite. The major reason that
phentermine results in weight loss, is that patients eat less. The thermogenic effect, on the other hand, may be useful in weight maintenance.
WHAT TYPE OF PHENTERMINE SHOULD I TAKE?
Phentermine in either the immediate release, extended release, or resin formula is effective for approximately 12-14 hours. However, patients new to phentermine may find they have more side effects with the immediate release pill and fewer with the extended release pill or the resin.
However, individuals' reactions to drugs can vary substantially. There is no way to tell if a generic vs. a brand name, or phentermine hydrochloride vs. phentermine resin will work better on you without trying it. All brands of phentermine (or of any drug for that matter) have subtle chemical differences, and we all have subtle differences in our brain chemistry -- which explains why some chemicals work on some patients and do not work on others.
Xenical
XENICAL is for people who are considerably overweight (at least 30 lbs, depending on height or have a BMI of 30 or greater). XENICAL is also for people who are overweight (at least 20 lbs, depending on height or have a BMI of 27 or greater) and also have other risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease or diabetes. XENICAL should be taken with a reduced-calorie diet containing no more than 30% of calories from fat.
Since XENICAL blocks about one third of the fat in the food you eat, you may experience gas with oily discharge, increased bowel movements, an urgent need to have them and an inability to control them, particularly after meals containing more fat than recommended.
XENICAL shouldnt be taken if you are pregnant, nursing, have food absorption problems or reduced bile flow. If you are taking cyclosporine, speak to your doctor before taking XENICAL. XENICAL reduces the absorption of some vitamins, therefore, a daily multivitamin is recommended.
Following 1 year of treatment with the weight loss drug XENICAL in combination with low calorie diet, weight reduction was shown to be more effective than dieting alone. In most cases, weight loss was gradual. Patients treated with XENICAL and a reduced-calorie diet for 1 year lost an average of 13.4 lbs, while those on a reduced-calorie diet alone lost 5.8 lbs. And XENICAL helped more people lose weight. In fact, over twice as many XENICAL patients lost 10% of their body weight, and among those who did, the average weight loss was 31 lbs and the range of weight loss was between 16 and 74 lbs.
