Original (not a recent reprint) 7 by 5 inch color photos by J Brian. Fine condition, full margins. Stamped on the verso in black ink "Ivan Prescott 1968 J Brian Enterprises..San Francisco.." An interesting studio whose images appeared just after the cups came off. Although considered to be below the pale (not cited in any standard text on Male Beekcake), I find the images rather attractive and for those in SF in those times, certainly a touchstone of Gay artistic pornography.

For each photo, $75

"I burn with a love that strict modesty prevents me to hide

Why am I constrained to be quite about it?

It being so contrary to my nature

Oh Muses it is to you I owe my happiness

My poetry even sung to Cithere

Have given me a bribing charm

which pursuades and pleases..."

Chappelle, (Jean de la de l'Academie Francaise) Les Amours de Tibulle Amsterdam, Chez Jean Fred. Bernard, 1715. Well bound in smooth calf with raised bands and gilt ornaments on the spines. Gilt lettering on red labels (titles) and on black labels (volume numbers). From the library of the Duke of Westminster with the bookplate of the great bibliophile Sir Richard Grosvenor (1689-1732), fourth Baronet in both volumes. Title pages in red and black, 24mo. Collation: First volume - 12ff, 252 pp for Livres 1 & 2; 5-124 for Livre 3 (Pagination erratic but no loss). Second volume - title, 125-304 for Livre 4. New title page. Pages 1-300 for Livres 5 and 6. Six woodcut classical engravings in Volume 1, two engravings in Volume 2. Woodblock title vignettes, initial letters and tail pieces. Shallow quarter moon loss to first title page not affecting text.

This is a rare work and was not included in the 1700 edition of the works of La Chappelle, since it was first published in Paris in 1712-13 in 3 volumes (see Jones or Cioranescu). It is not an historical work, but a novel concerning the Gay Roman poet Tibullus, with some excerpts from his famous love poems (translated very freely into French).

La Chappelle (1651-1723) entered the Academie Francaise in 1689. Both Chaudon and Querard give the date of his birth incorrectly as 1655.

$2,500
