Charles Warren Stoddard

1845-1909

Secretary to Mark Twain, Stoddard was also a close friend of Robert Louis Stevenson, Rudyard Kipling, Jack London, and Bret Harte. Once called the Boy Poet of San Francisco writing under the name Pip Pepperpot, Charles was, by many accounts, one of the first Uranian American writers--dedicated to purple prose, posy, ink, and over the edge interior design. Carefully hiding his taste for young South Sea hula boys and urban street "waifs" beneath reams of Victorian obfuscation, he nevertheless was a pioneering American homosexual author and character, whose life style in some ways out wilded Wilde.

Stoddard, Charles Warren. Poems. San Francisco, A. Roman and Company, Fall 1867. First edition of Stoddard's first book which was complied and edited by Harte Crane. The book itself was underwritten by subscription and illustrated by his friend WIlliam Keith. One of 750 copies printed. Original green pebbled cloth (BAL's Binding State A). A nice copy with minor wear to head of spine and spotting to rear board. BAL 7234 (under Harte, Bret) and BAL 18971 (under Stoddard). Not listed in Young but among the verses are references to homoerotic love and "My heavy woe I may not name." [Sold]
