Reprinted in 1969 and 1971 (London), this was the first book to attempt an over view of practical homosexual lore and folkways, including book reviews, a bibliography of famous Gays (including J. David, Villers. Love In London. London, Duckworth, 1954. Fine in red cloth covered boards. Fine dust jacket designed by David with a bit of barely noticeable spotting. The story revolves (actually spins out of control) around a Latin American Ambassador Senor Calderony y Carrambas and his lovely wife and daughter. Both the broads have the hots for their handsome, young, tall, and blond British body guard Tom English. Unfortunately the Carrambas's interior decorator, Tristan, also has the hots for Tom. In the end, Tristan almost gets Tom and Senora Carramba gets Tristan by blackmailing him and refusing to pay her enormous redecoration tab. All in all a rather sticky wicket. Interestingly, this work is not mentioned in either Young or Summers. There are only 3 OCLC holdings in America, all of the 1959 American Coward McCann edition. $225

"The Nazi had used Aaron's tortured flesh in every conceivable way and still he continued to submit to their twisted hungers in order to escape the gas-chamber's ultimate seduction. But there was no way for him to escape what he had become, a perverse tool of Nazi degradation, the target of every sadist and deviate in the Third Reich. (no wonder he couldn't get his beauty rest)"

Delany, Samuel. Tides of Lust. London, Savoy, 1981. Fine in fine paper wraps with a very small and shallow cut (less than 1/16th of an inch) running through the base of the book, not affecting text, 173 pages. Only 5 OCLC holdings for this edition. $125

Originally written in 1973 along with the novel Hogg, Tides of Lust was first published by Lancer in New York ( 6 OCLC holdings) who specialized in smut books. Like the other two publishers, who had earlier agreed to publish the book but never did, Lancer went belly up shortly after issuing Tides. Most of the press run was never distributed (probably being pulped by the bankruptcy executor). In 1981, Tides was reissued by Savoy. However, the British Government impounded the novel before it was distributed and burned the entire press run. Tides has never been published again. What evil possesses this book and curses all who are involved with it (except the author).?

In polite academic discourse, the subject of Tides deals with the most basic of all Jungean sexual archetypes-the amorphously amoral and all consuming sexual licentiousness untamed and unfiltered that underlies our conscious lives and perceptions. The book's story line (set in a Southern shrimping town ala Porky and Bess) explicitly describes a varied and vast plethora of sexual activities long considered taboo, such as bestiality, incest, interracial couplings, necrophilia, coprophilia and homosexual acts, both as individual acts by themselves and in some rather inventive combinations. Not since Sade, has there been quite such a book. Unlike traditional pornography, which is meant to stimulate, Tides is a philosophical novel, exposing us to ourselves and laying bare the roots of our unseen and unspoken sexual desires.

Two of the novels most touching scenes center around the playful antics of two bastard sons (one white the other black but both well hung), their separate mothers, and their shared father-all merrily romping away with each other in the cabin of a swaying boat-and a charming father and son dwarf tag team who play around with the dead, the near dead, and each other.

God it's hot out here! I'm sweating like a stuck pig

Known in Europe for his eccentric blend of dark humor, literary illusions, and twisted eroticism, Akbar remains a virtual unknown here in America. To rectify this wrong, PT offers the following scarce edition of his The Traveler's Companion.

Del Piombo, Akbar (pseudonym of Norman Rubington). The Travelers Companion. Covina CA, Collectors, 1967. First American printing after the 1957 Olympian press edition. Fine in fine paper wraps. No U.S. holdings of this edition, only two of the 1957 edition. This title not listed in Young or Summers although it contains secondary plot lines involving homosexuals.

The Travelers Companion consists of two novellas, A Crumbling Facade and I Have Come Back. As with most of his other works, Akbar populates these stories with a wild assortment of randy fading aristocrats, such as the Baroness von Sprathen Olaf-Pinz, house guests that out stay their welcome, and freakishly endowed servants and camp followers. Throw in crumbling mansions, aslyums for the sexually insane run by nuns (footnote 1), none stop mosh pits, and a wide assortment of candles, bottles, ears of corn, bicycle handles, goats, etc. and you get one devil of a good read. $150

1. "a horde of livid nuns invaded the room brandishing an ugly army of whips and lashes which they took to flailing about..dispersing the sex-mob with outraged cries (sic transit gloria mundi)"

[Erotica, underground] Story No. 1. Prior to a series of Supreme Court decisions in the 1960s which expanded the boundaries of free speech, most Gay erotic stories were circulated by means of hand typed manuscripts. Sometimes available from behind the counters of local dirty book stores, they also circulated among the Gay community much like a chain letter-recipients were expected to type out additional copies and then pass them along. In this way a number of underground erotic classics, such as Three In A Barn (which was suppose to have originated in the Army camps of WWI) , were passed from one generation to another. Perhaps unique in the annuals of American literature (although quite often seen in authoritarian states such as the former Soviet Union), this almost Homeric tradition helped preserve a vital part of the Gay written heritage. Story No. 1. is one such hand typed manuscript.
Although the story itself is, by today's standards, rather tame, it is suffused with an almost palatable sexuality as the two main characters coyly meet and fall into a whirlwind of unbridled emotion and lust, perfectly capturing one aspect of the pre-Stonewall Gay milieu. (On a less stuffy note, the party progresses, friends drop by, the vermouth runs out, and things really get out of hand.) Fine, eight single spaced hand typed pages on onion skin paper, yapped hard paper boards slightly frayed. $350
