Anonymous. All The Sad Young Men. (Gay pulp fiction) New York, Wisdom, 1962. Fine in paper wraps with a few very small hinge and edge chips, 158 pages. "Alone, lonely, finding no satisfaction with the many women with whom he had affairs, he found himself in a third avenue bar one night being picked up by a young boy..he was caught, trapped in the world of all the sad young men who are neither men nor women, only lost souls." Norman listing 112 and Young 35* $125

Anonymus. Les Ephebes. Published in 1924 by Guy Levis-Mona in Paris and illustrated with 10 woodcuts by Lucien Lovel--of extremely whispy looking young men in various decadant poses. Fine in fine paper wraps with some edge wear and small chips to edges of the green paper dust jacket. Introduction by Mano with quotes by Wilde and Baudelaire on the title page and cover. This unauthored collection of poems dedicated to ephebic love does not appear in the following catalogues: OCLC, Harvard, the Library of Congress, or Kinsey. Not cited in Young, Summers, De-Arch Smith or any other Gay literature reference work--leading me to suspect it was either suppressed or printed in such small numbers that very few survived. The original edition consisted of only 63 copies. This edition is from the original plates with the imprint of La Revue sans Titre on the title page and the notation 3rd edition on the green paper wraps. An extremely important and rare item. [sold]

Below is my translation of one of the poems (pardon the rusty French), illustrative of the book's general tenor:

Perversion

Naughty Dream

Ne souris pas jeune homme

Do not smile young man

ne souris pas si doucement

don't smile so sweetly

ton sourire effeuille une rose

your smile wilts the rose

et montre la blancheur dun lis

and reveals the lily's pallor

Laisse tes jolies levres closes

Leave your pretty lips closed

ton sourire appelle mes levres

your smile beckons my lips

mes levres voudraient te froler

lips that would play with you

Tu es trop innocent enfant

You are such an innocent child

ne souris pas ainsi

to smile that way

Do not lower your eyes enfant

When my eyes look at you

your eyes shine so intensely

that gems by their side seem faded

Leave go of your hands enfant

place your pale lithe hands

in my radiant touch

although my hands are hot

the touch of hands is the

sweetest touch

leave go of your hands enfant

You do not know enfant

why my gaze of you is so intense

it's because your eyes sparkle

with astonishment and lust

and because my body craves to know you

Oh you who knows nothing of

these sweet unsettling things

that men find strange

that men do not comprehend

No, you are too naive

Flee enfant, my beautiful enfant flee

Thus I spoke so strangely to this man

this man of such beautiful sweet eyes

Anonymous. Male Bride. (Gay pulp fiction) Manhasset, NY, Kozy, 1963. Fine in fine paper wraps, 153 pages. First edition, first printing. "This is Jackie Cassius's story, an actor who was a bi-sexual, he found himself more attracted to men than to women...into the twilight of desire and dreams. He becomes a MALE BRIDE." Male Bride was one of the first overtly packaged paperbacks aimed directly at Gay audiences. Norman listing 710.. Only two OCLC holdings, Michigan State and New York Public Library. $125

Anonymous. Miss High Heels. NY, Grove, 1969. Fine in fine DJ, 168 pages. Story of a young boy abducted into a sordid world of bad cross dressers. First privately printed in Paris in 1931. Young listing 2725. $ 75

Anonymous. Nero and Sporus A Play. Dijon, Privately printed by Darantiere, 1924. Fine in paper wraps, first 3 pages partially detached. No OCLC or Bibliotheque Nationale listing. Young listing 2845*.

Although unknown, the author of this play was very familiar with both scholastic and literary interpretations of Nero and of the role homosexuals have played throughout history. In the introduction, he (or she) makes a very cogent argument that Nero has been unfairly maligned throughout history, starting with Suetonius and abetted by legions of Christian bigots. In truth, according to the introduction, Nero was a real fun Gay guy, representing the best of the pagan ideal--attuned to beauty and unshackled from the biases of ordinary mortals--somewhat like Oscar Wilde. In a sense this play was a hymn not only to Nero and Sporus but also a hymn to sexual freedom and love. As the author so aptly puts at the end of the introduction--"as Mr. W.H. lives in Shakespeare, Charmidies in Plato, Atthis in Sappho, why not Sporus in the life of Nero?"

It is unknown whether this play was ever produced, although given its extremely overt and sympathetic portrayal of Gay love it is highly unlikely. The lack of library listings indicates that very few copies were printed and even fewer have survived. An extremely important and incredibly scarce item. [sold]

Anonymous. (Michael Nelson) A Room In Chelsea Square. New York, Doubleday, 1959. Fine in greenish/yellow cloth covered boards. Dust jacket with slight edge wear and tanned spine, first edition, first printing, 218 pages. Full dust jacket illustration by Edward Gorey showing two evil looking fey fags in green cut too tight English twills and tweeds. One swishy queen is reclining on a purple divan while the other, with legs crossed in an impossible position, daintily swirls a martini. The story itself revolves around 5 Gay Britishers all enmeshed in a variety of bitchy games and twisted relationships-somewhat prefiguring The Boys in the Band. Multiple (33) OCLC holdings. No Interloc, ABAA, or ABE listings. London 1958 edition is Young listing 2488*. $195

Apollinaire, Guillaume. (pseudonym of Wilhekm-Apollonaris de Kostrowitzky) The Debauched Hospodar. Covina, CA, Collectors, 1967. First American edition, paperback original. Fine in slightly discolored paper wraps, 121 pages. 1971 edition is Young 105. In this book, his takeoff of 120 Days at Sodom, Apollinaire extends and expands the depraved imagery of the divine Marquis in the form of a really rotten to the core Moldavian nobleman and his globe trotting search for fresh corporal sensations. Written at the turn of the century, The Debauched Hospodar is a fin de siecle erotic masterwork, the best of all the pornographic works churned out by Apollinaire, overshadowing anything produced by Proust or Wilde. In 1977, Robert Frawn, rewrote this book, entitling it Three Bulls in Debauchery, but only after giving it a much more overt homosexual cast of characters (see listing below). $125
