| Overview of the Overview | In its most elemental and perhaps most useful form, the HoloBarre is "merely" a single adjustable bar in a doorway or hallway. It can be positioned anywhere from floor level to ceiling height in inconspicuous and quickly installable tracks, instantly and lockably, which provides an unmatched level of strength and stability. What you can now do with this bar is extraordinary and yet not immediately apparent. | |
| Does everything, and renders you independent | The HoloBarre is a simultaneously revolutionary and "back to basics" system. For the knowledgeable dancer, it subsumes and extends the Pilates Method. In fact, with its array of attachments and accessories, it subsumes virtually every exercise/fitness modality in existence. Without the attachments and accessories, it still obviates most other equipment and methods. | This is because the HoloBarre UTILIZES YOUR ENTIRE BODY via long-established principles which have been largely ignored in the out-of-the-box/under-the-bed junk equipment peddled today on TV. Although there is something to be said for machines and stations dedicated to specific muscle function, there is much more to be said for understanding your body so as not to be dependent on these machines for fitness. |
The HoloBarre claims following: |
With only one adjustable bar in a doorway (no other
attachments) the HoloBarre can do 99% of the exercises that 99% of the
population needs.
It can accomplish this with instant convenience, shifting from exercise to exercise in SECONDS, sometimes SPLIT seconds, with enormous load bearing capacity and safety, with no stress on the doorjamb or hallway, or whereever it is attached. For the remaining 1% of the exercises for the remaining 1% of the population, attachments exist which allow the HoloBarre System to effectively DUPLICATE THE FUNCTION OF VIRTUALLY EVERY EXERCISE MACHINE KNOWN TO MAN (and then some), as well as supporting semi-exotic equipment such as heavy boxing bags, speed bags, and other sport-specific equipment. The free-standing version accommodates full gymnastic apparatus, as well as extensive applications to physical therapy and rehab. |
|
| How and Why these claims can be made Why hasn't other equipment been made that could make these claims? |
The HoloBarre can make the extraordinary claims made on the previous screens because it fully utilizes basic but very powerful principles that have been largely ignored, essentially because "higher-tech" solutions to exercise are more marketable and therefore more profitable. Any undergraduate science or engineering student is quite familiar with these principles, but because these principles are a little subtle and therefore not so easily marketable in the way the products you see on TV are, their significance and uses have not been popularized. | |
| The HoloBarre, through basic principles, makes virtually all exercises available to all people, regardless of handicap or ability | Significantly, the HoloBarre and these principles opens
up previously closed doors by making countless exercises ACCESSIBLE to millions
of peole who previously could not hope to attempt such exercises, and thus have
been denied a most beneficial and efficient source of fitness. Instead, they
are presented with so-called "breakthrough" machines, which amount to
little more than insults to the fitness process. Thus, ALL persons, regardless of condition, age, handicap, or strength, can now engage in super-effective super-effiicient routines without costly machines, gym memberships, and other mis-represented products. |
|
| Why machines originated | Previously, you could either do a chinup, or you couldn't.
Once you were hanging from the bar, you either struggled up, or just hung! You
could do a "full" pushup, or you couldn't; ditto dips, kneebends, etc.
In fact, machines were developed precisely because 1) calisthenics were readily accessible (do-able) mainly by very fit men under age 30; 2) they were, to many, not comfortable from a position point of view, or were uncomfortably difficult, with no apparent way to modulate the resistance; 3) compared to normal barbells, they were much more convenient. Adjustable weight machines (with selectorized stacks) solved this problem. |
Had the HoloBarre system been available at the time of its ancestor, the chin up bar, it is quite possible that today's home fitness market, with all of its contraptions, expense, misrepresentation, fraud, and junk, would not exist. Even the few legitimate products that currently exist (mostly variously similar home gyms with various stations and selectorized weight stacks) would have trouble competing against the HoloBarre, because they are rendered SUPERFLUOUS. You should realize that these systems consume valuable square footage, and that the HoloBarre has a selectorized weight stack as one of its many attachments! |
The principles used by the HoloBarre are: |
1. Geometry: The Height and angle at which you perform
an exercise (apply force) greatly affects the resistance you feel (perceived
weight): Inclined pushups can be performed by virtually anyone; full military
pushups cannot. Military pushups with the feet raised are more difficult still.
Thus, geometry (positioning of the body relative to the HoloBarre) can adjust
resistance just as adding or subtracting plates on a weight machine does. Would
you like excruciating details
on these concepts, as well as some additional ranting and raving? 2. Limb vs. Limb Interaction: a. The legs can assist the arms (and vice-versa) in many exercises, decreasing the weight felt by the arms, so that many exercises, such as chinups, can be performed where normally they could not. b. The legs can resist the arms, creating weightlifting-type exercises such as curls and military presses using the HoloBarre at various heights, or making the full chinup even more difficult. 3. Single limb stress: Resistances much greater than the body weight can be achieved by simply letting one limb do the work of two, such as with one-legged kneebends. The overall body support and balance provided by the HoloBarre makes these possible, whereas normally they are not. Such exercises greatly improve coordination and balance, along with strength, and are very interesting to perform. 4. Velocity/Acceleration/Momentum: are utilized to markedly increase stresses to limbs and muscles, as well as to decrease them to provide overall aerobicity. The effectiveness of these techniques depends also on Geometry, that is, how the body is positioned relative to the HoloBarre. These are classical and intuitive applications of Newton's Laws and biomechanics to the moving human body. 5. Summed Incremental Isometrics: can be used by certain disabled, joint impaired persons which, unlike normal isometric exercises, are equivalent, in their sum, to full range of motion calisthenic exercises. 6. Wherever possible, the HoloBarre implements spine-STRETCHING rather than spine-compressing techniques. Your spine is being compressed all day, in normal activity as well as in traditional exercise. De-compressing exercises, especially for people over 40, are a welcome and therapeutic alternative. Bear in mind, however, that some exercises inherently compress the spine, unless extraordinary measures are taken. Some of these will be explored. |

Intro to an actual routine |
If you have ploughed through this far, you deserve a
concrete example of how this system is used, in particular, by the inventor
himself. The following comprises about a 10 minute routine, using only one bar. It is the inventor's personal hobby to see just how far the fitness envelope can be pushed with a single bar in a doorway. I can and do build myriads of attachments, but always find myself gravitating to a single bar. I will give the TOP FOUR exercises, which, if you never do anything else, will virtually guarantee you muscular strength, in just minutes a day. |
|
| The routine | 1. I always hang. If nothing else gets done during the
day, when I pass through the doorway I hang with one or both arms. Usually I
swing, and do leg lifts, for the abdomen as well as the back. Often I will lower the bar, so that my arms are NOT supporting my full bodyweight, and hang with my feet on the ground, knees bent. Very relaxing, and good for the lower back. This group of exercises is crucial to anyone with recurring back problems, and senior citizens whose vertebrae are "shrinking". Needless to say, this is great for the joints, shoulders, and hand, wrist, and forearm strength. |
|
| 2. Next, I lower the bar to chin height and do many leg-assisted chinups, at varying loads. A subtle exercise for which you need to see a demonstration. But suffice it to say here that the legs do for the arms what no exercise machine or computer can accomplish. I NEVER do full chinups anymore. These "reduced stress" also chinups give a superb "pump". | ||
| 3. Next, I lower the bar to waist height, and do a variety of pushups: slow, fast, jerky, falling in, pushing out hard, etc. Again, these need to be demonstrated. I do these at a series of 3-5 different heights of the bar. Equivalent to bench pressing. | ||
| 4. I lower the bar to about a foot off the ground, warm
up with a few regular kneebends, and then do one-legged kneebends, with one foot
on the bar, and the other dangling off the bar. Normally I have a second bar
overhead, but these kneebends can be done almost as well holding on to the door
jamb. This routine, or parts thereof, takes 30 seconds to ten or fifteen minutes, depending on how I feel, or how rushed I am. At the end, the bar snaps into its resting place at the top notches in the door jamb, instantly out of the way, but still there for a quick hang! |
||
| How complete is an abbreviated workout? Very. | Later, we will analyze just how complete the above workout
is, and compare it, blow by blow, to what is out on the market today. You
should be aware, however, that my routine above just barely scratches the
surface of everything the HoloBarre can do. The above is simply my abbreviated
preference, which I also believe does an exceptional job of targeting major
muscle groups. But regardless of what your preferences are, the HoloBarre will
be able to accommodate them quickly, efficiently, effectively, and.....honestly. Another interesting feature of the HoloBarre is that warmups are often built in: You can start with an easy version of several exercises, and build up to the more strenuous versions In general, however, it is wise to do aerobic activities before strength, and these too can be done on the HoloBarre. Running in place is not bad either, along with jumping jacks. |
|
| Building your own HoloBarre | You could build your own HoloBarre, as I did, before I had it professionally machined and constructed (this is no junk item!). Later, I will provide a link on how to do so, but consider the fact that this device did not become comercially viable until all the safety bugs were worked out. Be aware that even a slight fall at the wrong angle or against the wrong object can be fatal or crippling. | |
| Favorite Attachment: Inverted Hanging | There is one attachment I use periodically, and
unfortunately it is one of the more expensive ones: a special electric winch
for hoisting myself upside down, for my back. One could just as easily hang by one's knees, but I hat doing this, and there are many reasons why adults should be careful about doing this. The electric winch (a mere $500 and up!) gently hoists one upside down, and is better and more therapeutic than the inversion machines available (also $500 and up!). Note, however, that this is but one of the attachments to the HoloBarre.. |
