FAQ

#1 most asked Q: Can I sign up yet? Can I sign up yet? How 'bout now?
A: We usually get the registration page updated & up in early/mid December. Watch your local YA/GenX group's announcement email list - that's how we announce that it's open. If you want to have your YA/GenX group notified when registration opens, and receive other emails about the Winter Escape, email winter-escape-registrar@fellowshipx.org.

Q: What's "Critical Mass"?
A: It is the network of Unitarian Universalist Young Adult Groups in the Greater Washington, D.C. area. It makes the Winter Escape possible by hosting it. More information can be found here.

Q: Why do some folks call it the "ski trip"?
A: The trip actually started out as "the ski trip," but, since folks can have a blast on the trip without ever hitting the slopes, we decided to change the name to "Winter Escape." Old habits die hard!

Q: I registered - when will I get more information?
A: The organizers get together for a meeting in January (or some years February...) and work out all the details. Afterwards, we send out "The Big Email," which everything you need to know in it, including house & meal assignments. It comes out 2 weeks before the trip at the latest.

Q: What's the proper temperature for a hot tub?
A: 104

Q: What's so special about Swallow Falls and Muddy Creek Falls?
A: "Swallow Falls State Park is home to the oldest grove of white pine and eastern hemlock in Maryland, with some trees over 360 years of age. This pristine grove of trees lies along the only officially designated Wild and Scenic River, the Youghiogheny. The area is most noted for Muddy Creek Falls, the tallest single drop waterfall in Maryland."
real A: Actually, it's because "they's pretty."

Q: Registration's full - is it worth it to get on the waiting list?
A: Most likely. There's always a few people who drop out at the last minute, and the spots opened are offered to people on the waiting list. If the list is long enough, it may be possible for the trip to rent another house.

Q no-one's ever asked, but we wish someone would: Are monkeys allowed on the trip?
A: The only allowed pets are dogs. And inflatable monkeys.

Q: There's no snow here - is there any snow up there?
A: Deep Creek always has more snow than the DC/Baltimore area since it's at a higher elevation, and most years there's enough snow to have fun with. Even when the snowfall is light, Wisp creates snow for downhill & tubing. You can check out the weather up there either on the Wisp web page or by checking weather for McHenry, Maryland.

Q: Can I be a den parent?
A: There's not a lot of turnover in den parents and it's something folks are interested in, so there's actually a waiting list. However, you never know what'll happen, so if you are seriously interested, let the current head trip organizer know.

Q: Why not iceberg lettuce?
A: Iceberg lettuce is almost all water, and includes very little healthy stuff like vitamins. On the other hand, lettuces like romaine and green leaf are very good sources of vitamins, and still taste good and are easy to work with.

Q: What's "The Cove"?
A: For the past half-dozen years, we've rented houses off of a little street, right on the lake. The area is called "Carmel Cove," and shortened to "the Cove."

Q: Uh... when I was driving there... did I see that sign right?
A: Yup, the last town before Deep Creek is actually named Accident, Maryland. I’ve always meant to mail a postcard from there just for the postmark, but haven’t gotten around to it...

Q: How long does it take to get there?
A: It usually takes 3-4 hours to get there, depending on traffic and where folks are starting from.

Q: Can I smoke on the trip?
A: The houses are all non-smoking, so only outside the houses.

Q: Can I come for only part of the weekend?
A: Yes, but we can't offer a discount on bedspace if you're not using it the whole time. However, it may be possible that you could split the bedspace with someone else. Contact your den parent or winter-escape-registrar@fellowshipx.org if you're interested.

Q: Can I come for just a day?
A: Probably. Contact winter-escape-registrar@fellowshipx.org if you're interested.
