Astronomy Presentations

  • 3:00 p.m. - Dr. Karl Hricko - AAI, Sperry Observatory, Union County College
"New Discoveries in Astronomy" - Dr. Hricko will discuss recent findings from the Hubble Telescope and from other astronomical observatories that impact our future view of the Universe.

  • 4:00 p.m. - Jim Burnell - Co-Author of "The Handbook of Astronomical Image Processing"
"Extracting Scientificly Useful Data from CCD Images" - Tired of just making pretty pictures with your CCD camera? Mr. Burnell will discuss amateur applications in photometry, astrometry (including asteroids), color imaging, and more.

  • 5:00 p.m. - Bill Murray - AAAP, Simpson Obs., Washington Crossing State Park
"A Beginners Guide to Observing the Deep Sky" - Mr. Murray will be discussing techniques for amateurs to observe galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters. Later in the evening (when it gets dark) he will use the 16-inch telescope in the Greenwood Observatory and utilize constellation referencing to identify and observe some of these objects.

  • 8:00 p.m. - Dr. Robert Vanderbei - Princeton University, Princeton, NJ
"A Proposal for Observing Extra Solar Terrestrial Planets for the Orbiting Observatory" - Dr. Vanderbei is one of just a few researchers planning the methodologies and technical equipment required for discovering earth-like planets in orbit around stars beyond our Solar System. The observatory has a scheduled launch for 2014.
Solar Observing - Observe sunspots, the Sun, and it's spectra

CCD Imaging Display - Electronic images of the deep sky

Displays by UACNJ Member Clubs - Astrophotography, antique astronomy items, meteorites and other Projects, as well as the .7-meter mirror, will be on display

Astronomy Sales - Books, Maps, and other astronomy items will be available

Evening Star Party - View galaxies, nebulae and other deep-sky objects through the observatory's 16-inch Newtonian, as well as a variety of UACNJ observer telescopes (weather permitting)

Refreshment Stand - Walk around food will be available on site
This is an event for amateur astronomers and others interested in astronomy. Admission is free. Fundraising events are: flea market/swap table, sales desk, and refreshment stand. All money raised from this event goes to the UACNJ Building and Maintenance Fund to help support the UACNJ Observatory and Education Center.
