General Information

The Astronomical Society of the Toms River Area (A.S.T.R.A.) is open to anyone who is interested in astronomy. Its 80 members are of all ages and levels of experience from novice to advanced observers. Beginners are especially welcome. The clubs' objective is to provide an open forum to those interested in exploring all aspects of this fascinating science.

Meetings

A.S.T.R.A. meets on the second Friday of each month (except August) at 8:00 P.M. in room P-109 of the Novins Planetarium. The meeting schedule for the year offers guest speakers, presentations by members or by Planetarium staff, workshops on some aspect of astronomy, or videotapes. Visitors are always welcome at meetings!

Activities

A.S.T.R.A. holds star parties at several locations several times a month (weather permitting), the date varying with the lunar cycle.

These star parties allow club members and guests a chance to observe many sky objects and to compare telescopes and accessories. In addition to its member star parties, A.S.T.R.A. also hosts public star parties during the year which include Astronomy Day, the Summer Starwatch, and others for special events. Many members attend, and many telescopes are available for visitors' enjoyment.

A.S.T.R.A. members celebrate the annual Perseid meteor shower with a picnic and star party on the Saturday closest to the peak of the shower (August 12).
