The Eighth Catalogue of the Orbital Elements of Spectroscopic Binary Systems is a resource available on the internet in HTML format, created by Alan H. Batten, J. Murray Fletcher, & D. G. MacCarthy from the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. It is designed for astrospectroscopists interested in observing the spectra of spectroscopic binary stars (SBs). It has very useful information on 1469 SBs with linkable notes. However, the primary page is nearly a half meg in size and can take a while to load.

If you plan to use this directory, we suggest that you make a personal working copy of it (HTML code) on your C-drive using the following steps (instructions are designed for Netscape users, but may be modified for other browsers):

  1. Make a directory on your C-drive called "sb8".
  2. Select the SB Catalogue Primary Contact option to load the Catalogue
  3. Select the "View", then "Page Source" options in Netscape to display the HTML code.
  4. With the left-mouse button, high-light all the HTML code from the displayed sb8.html file
  5. Press Ctrl-C to place the high-lighted text on the clip-board.
  6. Go into your ASCII editor -- create a new file -- and paste the HTML text into the new file.
  7. Save the file as "sb8.htm" in the newly created "sb8" directory on the C-drive.
  8. You should now be able to access the Catalogue by selecting the Personal Working Copy. It should load very fast since the primary data HTML page now resides on your disk and does not require downloading from the internet each time you wish to use it.
