Friday, May 25, 2001 Excerpt from the Journal of Rory Gilmore It's been a really weird day. Mom and I were at the Friday night dinner and I asked Grandpa if he had any good books on dreams. I told him about the nightmares I've been having and he got all alarmed. Then he called me into his study and asked me to lift his desk. He explained that I'd become something called a Vampire Slayer and I'd just been called to fight vampires, etc. Then he told me that he was going to oversee my training. Mostly combat but I'd also have an active role in research. When we got home, I explained everything to Mom and demonstrated by lifting the couch. She believed me after she got over the shock. I promised to keep her informed about everything. Saturday, June 2 Excerpt from the Journal of Rory Gilmore Today I had my first training session with the experts Grandpa hired. Grandma watched for a while after she brought some refreshments. I think I did all right but I really have a lot to learn. Grandpa also set up a trust fund for me. He explained that a Slayer often has trouble holding a regular job. Mom asked a lot of questions about the fund, but she was eventually satisfied with the answers. Thursday, August 23 Excerpt from the Journal of Rory Gilmore There are no vampires in Star's Hollow. I didn't expect there would be. Our town is too small to have mysterious deaths go unnoticed. But there don't seem to be any vampires in Hartford, either. Or much of anything supernatural. At least not hostile supernatural. We haven't found any explanation but Grandpa suspects there's something about the area that keeps those things away. But why would a Slayer be called in an area that didn't have any supernatural threats? Thursday, October 11 Excerpt from the Journal of Rory Gilmore Grandpa said he'd looked into the dream I had last week. He said that the previous Slayer (Buffy Summers) had been resurrected. That means there are three Slayers now. Grandpa said that before a few years ago there had never even been two Slayers at the same time, let alone three. Thursday, September 12, 2002 Excerpt from the Journal of Rory Gilmore I've been having nightmares about hooded figures chasing and killing girls about my own age. Grandpa said the girls are potential Slayers. He thinks the hooded figures are servants of a power called the First Evil. He's starting to collect all of the information he can find related to the First Evil and we've been systematically going through it. But it feels strange just sitting here while the Potentials are being killed. I asked Grandpa whether I should be out there to draw the First's fire. He said it wasn't a good idea. That it wasn't time for me to break cover. Mom agreed with him. They've been agreeing on a lot of things since I became a Slayer. Tuesday, November 19 Excerpt from the Journal of Rory Gilmore Grandpa told me that the Watcher's Council was destroyed and most of the Watchers were killed. He suspects the First Evil had something to do with it but that it still wasn't time for me to leave here. Maybe he's right. I don't even have any idea how I could fight the First Evil. It just feels like I should be doing more than I am. Tuesday, May 13, 2003, Night: Star's Hollow, Connecticut Rory and Lorelai (Rory's mom) are in their living room. Rory says hesitantly "Mom? I need to tell you something." Lorelai asks "What is it?" Rory continues "I may need to leave for Sunnydale soon. We've been looking through ancient prophecies and Grandpa is keeping track of developments there. We think something very important is about to happen." She pauses. "Grandpa wants me to keep training and researching for as long as possible but he said I might need to leave on short notice." Lorelai stares at Rory for a moment. She starts to speak and then stops. Finally she asks "Rory, are you sure about this?" Rory nods. "I'm sure." She gives Lorelai a hug. "Don't worry, Mom, I'll be fine. And I'm not leaving right away." She pauses. "Just soon." Thursday, May 22, Night: Hartford, Connecticut Rory and Richard (Rory's Grandpa) are researching in his study. Rory is looking through a book and suddenly stops. "I don't think I've seen this before." She pauses. "There's a prophecy about something called the Scythe of the Guardians. It says the Thriceborn Slayer is supposed to use it against the First Evil in the final battle." She pauses again. "Could the Thriceborn Slayer be Buffy?" Richard nods. "That sounds reasonable. Does it say where the Scythe is?" Rory replies "It says it was hidden at the Gate of Hell." She pauses. "The Hellmouth?" Richard considers. "Also likely." He pauses. "We should look into this but it may finally be time for you to leave for Sunnydale." Thursday, May 29, Night: Star's Hollow, Connecticut Rory and Lorelai are in their living room. Rory says "I'm just about packed. I'll be leaving right after breakfast tomorrow." She pauses. "At least I got to stay until after graduation." Lorelai gives Rory a hug. "I wish you didn't have to go." She pauses. "Promise me you'll be careful." Rory reassures her. "Don't worry, Mom. I've been training for almost two years. And I've read almost everything that exists about the First Evil. I'll ... I'll be fine." She pauses. "And keep practicing hiking. Because as soon as I get back, we're going backpacking through Europe. Just as we planned." Lorelai tries to smile. "I know." She pauses. "When you get back." Friday, May 30, Night: Summers' Residence Buffy, Xander, Spike, Willow, Faith, Giles, and Rory are meeting in Buffy's room. They are discussing Buffy's plan to attack Caleb. Rory listens to the discussion for a few moments and then says in a puzzled tone "I don't understand. You're all talking about Caleb. Shouldn't we first look for the Scythe of the Guardians?" The others look surprised. Buffy asks "The what?" Rory responds "You don't know about it? I thought you knew about it." She pauses. "It's a mystical weapon associated with the Slayer line. It should be somewhere in Sunnydale." Giles asks "Are you sure it's here?" Rory responds "Not completely sure. But the prophecy said it was hidden at the Gate of Hell. And that the Thriceborn Slayer would use it against the First Evil." She pauses. "Sunnydale seemed like a good bet." Buffy considers. "Caleb said he had something of mine. This could be it." Giles responds "Or it could still be a stapler." Buffy says firmly "I'm tired of waiting. When we find Caleb, we're going in." Friday, May 30 Excerpt from the Journal of Rory Gilmore I finally had my first real fight. Not that I did much good. I hardly even got a blow in. Buffy and Faith found Caleb's hideout in an old vineyard. We attacked in force, three Slayers and a powerful vampire, and Xander and nine Potentials. But Caleb was too strong for us and we had to retreat. At least no one was seriously hurt. Tuesday, June 3 Excerpt from the Journal of Rory Gilmore Not much progress on the Scythe. Willow tried a locator spell but didn't find anything. Buffy's getting edgy. I'm sure she's getting ready to go back to Caleb's vineyard. I've been analyzing the battle every way I can think of. And I've talked it over with Grandpa. We threw everything we had at Caleb, except for Willow. I asked her a couple of days ago to try to think of magical ways of dealing with Caleb. I don't know how much progress she's made. Wednesday, June 4, Night: Summers' Residence Buffy, Faith, Xander, Willow, Dawn, Rory, Spike, Giles, Andrew, Wood, and the Potentials are gathered in the living room. Buffy explains that she wants to attack the vineyard again. There is silence for a few moments. Rory looks around and then asks "How?" Buffy says "What do you mean?" Rory continues "The last time we fought him we lost. What's different this time?" Buffy replies "We're prepared for him." Faith remarks "Not good enough, B." Buffy continues "Willow can be in the attack party. She can deal with Caleb." Willow looks reluctant. "W-what if Caleb doubles back on us and attacks the house?" Buffy responds "He won't. He'll stay at the vineyard. And we'll leave some people here." Rory shakes her head. "Not enough people. We can't leave enough people to defend the house from Caleb and still have enough to attack the vineyard." She pauses. "So how sure are you that Caleb will stay at the vineyard?" She pauses again. "Sure enough to risk Dawn's life on the answer?" Buffy hesitates. She looks uncertain for a moment and then says firmly "Yes." Rory nods. "Fine." She pauses. "So let's talk about the battle plan." Wednesday, June 4, Night: Summers' Residence Giles, Wood, Caridad, Colleen, Kelly, and Dominique are all sitting in the living room. Rory and Dawn are looking nervously out the window. Dawn says "Still no sign of them." Rory reassures her. "Don't worry. They'll be fine." Dawn remarks "So Buffy gets to raid the vineyard and you're stuck on watch." Rory responds "Someone had to stay behind. Buffy, Faith, and Spike all have much more combat experience. It makes sense for them to go." She pauses. "I think I see them." She looks more carefully. "They're back!" Shortly afterwards Buffy, Faith, Spike, Xander, Willow, Kennedy, Vi, Molly, Amanda, Rona, Dianne, and Isabella enter. Buffy carries a weapon with an axe-like blade on one end and a pointed stake on the other. Buffy exults "We got it!" Giles asks "And Caleb?" Buffy replies "Dead. Willow's spell stunned him and by the time he recovered we had the Scythe. Chopped him neatly in two." She pauses and turns to Rory. "Willow said you had her working on spells to fight Caleb." Rory shrugs. "You like to improvise. I like to plan ahead." She touches the blade. "I can feel it." She pauses. "It doesn't really look like a scythe. They should have called it the Axe of the Guardians." She pauses again. "So what's next?" Buffy responds "More research. Other than that, I don't know." She pauses. "Can't we just celebrate for a few moments?" Rory smiles. "Sure." Friday, June 6 Excerpt from the Journal of Rory Gilmore Spike has a new amulet. Buffy got the amulet from her ex-boyfriend Angel and then gave it to Spike. The amulet is powerful. We can tell that much. There's an enormous amount of power, just waiting to be triggered. But we still don't know precisely how to trigger it. Or exactly what will happen when we do. Saturday, June 7, Early Morning: Summers' Residence Buffy, Xander, Faith, Willow, Dawn, Giles, Anya, and Rory are meeting in Buffy's room. Buffy outlines her plan and says "Well? What do you think?" Rory stares at her for a moment. "It's very risky. Even if Willow gets her spell working, there's no guarantee Spike will get his amulet to work." Willow looks uncertain. "And this is beyond anything I've ever done. I've never even tried anything like this." Buffy reassures her. "I wouldn't ask if I didn't think you could do it." Giles adds "You'll be fine, Willow. You can talk to the coven, see how they can help. I'll start checking my sources." He pauses. "Let's get to work." Rory looks around carefully and then nods. "All right. I hope this works." She pauses. "I'll talk to my Grandpa. Maybe he can find out something useful." Sunday, June 8 Excerpt from the Journal of Rory Gilmore It worked. Buffy's plan worked. Sunnydale is a big hole in the ground but we defeated the First Evil, at least for now. We held back the Turok-han until Spike's amulet cleared them away. We did lose three of the new Slayers, Spike, and Anya. And Mr. Wood was seriously injured, although the hospital said he should recover. We've started talking about what happens next. Willow said that there were more Slayers activated around the world and we need to find them and explain what happened. It sounds like they're going to create a new Watcher's Council, although it'll probably be structured differently. I haven't decided on my own plans. I'll think about it when I'm backpacking through Europe with Mom. I still want to go to Yale and I should be able to now. But I'm still a Slayer and eventually I'll have to get back to Slayer business.
