NEW YORK CITY CLUB
TAURINO (NYCCT) by Lore Monnig,

NYCCT was founded with the
objective of providing and enhancing an appreciation and knowledge of
tauromachia through a variety of taurine and related events. NYCCT serves as a
resource for those wishing to expand their knowledge of taurine matters and
actively seeks to enhance its membership by including as members people with
all levels and types of afición for the toros
NYCCT considers all aspects
of the toro bravo and toreo. Our goal is to instill an appreciation for all
that surrounds the animals and the art – the raising of the bulls, the training
of the toreros, the business of running plazas de toros, the advances in
technology and their effect on the spectacle as we see it today, and the
importance of the “secondary” players, whether they be the men in silver or the
picadors. We believe that the more a person knows and understands, the more
they can appreciate what they are seeing – and the more they appreciate, the
more they will enjoy!
NYCCT also emphasizes an
appreciation for the history and traditions of toreo, focusing on details such
as the colors worn by the toreros, the types of horses used, and the evolution
of the vara – to name a few. There is simply no end to the topics that can be
explored – perhaps we are overly ambitious, but we do not lack enthusiasm!
However when taurinos go to
a feria to see the bulls, they are actually in the plaza de toros only about 2
hours – so there is a lot of time to enjoy other aspects of local culture. It
is, in fact, during the ferias that all the best of each region becomes
available. So NYCCT also looks at the
history and culture of the towns that have major taurine ferias, as well as the
regional foods and wines that can enjoyed there. We do not organize any trips,
but we do want our members to get the most out of the time they spend in Spain
or whatever other taurine country.
NYCCT meets generally the
first Thursday of each month and we publish a periodic Newsletter. In addition,
we are a part of Jornadas Taurinas that sponsors a US lecture tour each year
for a well-recognized taurine person, and we have a number of guest speakers
from Spain and other taurine countries that may be visiting New York.
