THE RESURGENCE OF "RANCHO SECO, A MEXICAN GANADERIA

"Rancho Seco" was founded in 1922, with the split of "Zotoluca" into two ranches by Don Aurelio Carvajal and his sister Beatríz. The northern portion was, in turn, inherited by her daughter doña Beaters Gonzalez C., who, In 1931, married Don Carlos Hernández, who ran the ganadería until his death in 1977. "Rancho Seco" was also split into two different bull breeding ranches, one owned by Carlos Hernández González (presently ganadería "Carlos Hernández ") and the other by Sergio Hernández González, who kept the name, seniority and divisa of "Rancho Seco".

The original blood is basically the Spanish "Saltillo", derived from "Zotoluca", which was a product of the split of "Tepeyahualco" in 1907. "Tepeyahualco" brought the "Saltillo" blood in 1904, which was shared by "Tepeyahualco" and "Piedras Negras". In 1922 Sergio's mother, doña Beatríz González, inherited from her mother the ganadería of "Rancho Seco" and in 1928 received her inheritance from her father, Don Romárico and her uncle, Don Lubín González, consisting of pure Saltillo blood cows and bulls. Don Carlos added "Murube" bulls brought from Spain in 1938, and in 1945 he added bulls from Carmen de Federico de Urquijo ("Murube") and "Conde de la Corte" that he personally brought from Spain. In 1984, Sergio began refreshing "Rancho Seco" with pure "Saltillo" blood from Javier Garfías. In 1997 Sergio brought cows and bulls from Spain of two breeds, "Santa Coloma" and "Murube" from the ganadería of Fermín Bohorquez. The results of this new encaste in "Rancho Seco" are still unknown, however, this encaste has proven to be successful by Conde de Santa Coloma in Spain.

The history of "Rancho Seco" is a long list of successes since the old years, with unforgettable bulls fought by Pepe Ortíz, Paco Gorráez Lorenzo Garza, Carlos Arruza, Fermín Espinosa "Armillita", Jorge Aguilar "El Ranchero", Juan Silveti, Manolo Martinez, Eloy Cavazos, Mariano Ramos, Curro Rivera, Miguel Espinosa 'Armillita Chico', David Silveti and recently Victor Puerto In 2000. Famous matadores Fermín Rivera and Antonio Lomelín received their alternativas with bulls from "Rancho Seco".
