About
Victor Mendes
Maestro Víctor Manuel Valentín Mendes was born in Marinhais
(Portugal) on February 14, 1959. His Debut con picadors was in 1978, and he
took his alternativa in Barcelona on September 13, 1981, with Palomo Linares as
his padrino and José María Manzanares as witness. He cut three ears from
bulls of Carlos Núñez. He confirmed his alternative in Madrid on May 16, 1982,
with Luis F. Esplá as padrino and José Nelo "Morenito de Maracay" as
witness with bulls of Pablo Romero. He retired on September 30, 2001, but has
remained active in festivals.
Known for putting in his own banderillas, Victor Mendes is one of the few
Portuguese matadors who made it into the top ranks of the escalafón. He is
known for his courage, his pundonor and his capacity to face bulls of some
category. (He went out on shoulders in Madrid with bulls of Victorino Martin
and again with bulls of Baltasar Ibán.) The maestro had a strong following not
only in Spain but also in France and South America. And he was one of the best
banderilleros of his time.
The maestro is currently active in performing in festivals, a speaker on the
taurine matters and has just undertaken to be the apoderado of Sebastián Palomo
Danko, the son of his padrino, Palomo Linar
