What is Process Safety Management?

Process Safety Management is a collection of management systems which, when combined with management commitment and involvement, result in the prevention of process related injuries and accidents. Management systems are used to identify, understand, and control process hazards. Management commitment is required because the effective implementation of these systems often requires organizational and cultural changes at all levels and functions of the organization.

Is a Process Safety Management program required in my facility?

Regulations require that a PSM program be implemented for processes containing over 10,000 pounds of a flammable liquid or gas, or more than a threshold quantity of other specified toxic materials. Facilities not required to have a PSM program can benefit by implementing some or all Process Safety Management program elements.
