PROCESS SAFETY MANAGEMENT - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The following are responses to typical questions concerning process safety management:

What is Process Safety Management?

Process Safety Management is a collection of management systems which, when combined with management commitment and involvement, result in the prevention of process related injuries and accidents. Management systems are used to identify, understand, and control process hazards. Management commitment is required because the effective implementation of these systems often requires organizational and cultural changes at all levels and functions of the organization.

Is a Process Safety Management program required in my facility?

Regulations require that a PSM program be implemented for processes containing over 10,000 pounds of a flammable liquid or gas, or more than a threshold quantity of other specified toxic materials. Facilities not required to have a PSM program can benefit by implementing some or all Process Safety Management program elements. LCAI engineers can evaluate your specific situation to determine if Process Safety Management program regulations apply, and identify the benefits of implementing a PSM program in your facility.

How do I implement a Process Safety Management program?

The US OSHA PSM program regulations require a program consisting of 14 management elements. The key to effective implementation of a PSM system is to properly prioritize these elements, evaluate existing work activities related to them, and develop logical implementation plans to enhance or supplement these activities and reach desired goals. Our engineers can apply their expertise to develop practical and cost effective implementation plans for your situation, and assist you in smoothly making the transition from paper plans to an active program.
