When I was growing up I got the message from my family and my school that the most important thing in life is having a job. Having friends, getting married, starting a family, getting involved in the local community and other stuff like that was considered to be secondary to getting that high-paying job. Well, it's hard to be bombarded by such messages without becoming affected. In time I became blind (figuratively speaking) to any other messages that I've might've heard to the contrary. Well in August, 1998, I almost became literally blind in one eye.
Some of you may be wondering why I'm writing about my eye. Well, I'm not doing it to gain sympathy. It's just that I rarely read or hear about people who faced blindness. In contrast, I've read and heard plenty about other illnesses, especially how these illnesses affected celebrities. I've heard all about Gilda Radner's unsuccessful battle with ovarian cancer, Richard Pryor's multiple sclerosis, Michael Eisner's quadruple heart bypass operation, and Roseanne's multiple personalities. But I haven't heard of anyone--celebrity or average Joe--speak openly about retina detachment. Yet I know that it's hardly a unique phenomenon because almost everytime I visited my retina specialist, the waiting room is usually pretty full. I decided to tell my story in full in the hopes of spreading the word on the importance of seeing a doctor when you start to see strange things that won't go away.
