Problem #1

If it takes 6 minutes to saw a log into 3 pieces, how many minutes will it take to saw the same log into 6 pieces? (Assuming you are sawing the log at the same rate and only a single cut at a time.)

Answer:

15

Two cuts are required to make 3 pieces. Each cut takes 3 minutes. Therefore, it would require 5 cuts to make 6 pieces. (5x3 =15)

 Problem #2

Can you make exactly $1.00 in change with exactly 3 coins?

Answer:

1 half dollar, 2 quarters

Problem #3

Use each digit once and once only. Keep them in order from 0 through 9. Add math signs to make a true equation as follows:

0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 = 9

(*You may use two digit numbers such as 23 or 67 as long, as the order is the same.)

Answer:

0 + 12 - 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 - 7 - 8 = 9

Problem #4

Use each of the ten digits once and once only to form an addition problem with the sum of 99.

0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 = 9

(*You may use two digit numbers such as 10 or 32. The order does not have to be the same.)

Answer:

50 + 19 + 8 + 2 + 7 + 3 + 6 + 4 = 99

Problem #5

If 5 gooofy gophers can dig 5 twisted tunnels in 5 days, how many goofy gophers would it take to dig 50 twisted tunnels in 50 days?

Answer:

It would take 5 goofy gophers to dig 50 twisted tunnels in 50 days.

It takes 5 gophers 1 day to build each tunnel. (If this one tricked you, you probably didn't read the problem carefully enough.)

Problem #6

Holly said, "I am older than 10. My sister, Molly, is younger than I am. When I multiply our ages I get 104." How old are Holly and Molly?

Answer:

Holly is 13. Molly is 8.

Problem #7

David's age is a multiple of 5. Next year, David's age will be a multiple of 7. How old is David now?

Answer:

David is 20 years old now. Next year he will be 21.

Problem #8

Mary, Ann , and Martha are triplets, but they are not identical triplets. Martha is heavier than Mary, but lighter than Ann. The heaviest is the shortest, and the lightest is the tallest. Who is the tallest? The shortest? The heaviest? The lightest?

Answer:

Mary is the lightest and also the tallest.
Ann is the shortest and also the heaviest.

(Martha is somewhere in the middle in height and weight.)

Problem #9

A book has 50 pages. How many 5's are used to number the pages?

Answer:

6

The page numbers are: 5, 15, 25, 35, 45, and 50.

Problem #10

One student was absent on Monday and on each day after that, the number of absent students doubled. How many students were absent on Friday and how many absences were there for the whole week?

Answer:

16 were absent on Friday.
31 were absent for the whole week.
