A word
on reproduction prints...
I get
many emails about how to determine whether a print is an
original print or a reproduction and my answer is
'yes'...what I mean is that all the prints were
reproductions..this is why they are prints and not
original paintings etc.
However,
what we are all looking for are the prints as they were
originally marketed...so in the date range of 1905 to
1952.
In the
1970's The Thought Factory started to reproduce many of
Bessie Pease Gutmann's artwork. They have a distinctive
pastel boarder and are of a large size ...usually 16 x
20.
Another
company, Portal Publications also put out reproductions
in the '80's and continue to do so today. The older
reproductions are distinctive in that they have a thin
line around the image and the title. They were also
marketed in 16 x 20 format. Portal Publications continues
to supply many art and craft stores with reproduction
works... including sachets, flue covers as well as an
assortment of images in many sizes.
How do
you know what to buy?
"Cravet
Emptor"
or
Buyer
Beware
1. Buy
from a reputable dealer.
2. Ask
questions. All dealers should know their
mechandise.
3.
Make sure the dealer stands behind their items and
guarantees satisfaction.
Hope
this helps....:-)
Many
people write to me about the differences between types
and ages of prints. Here is a great site that will answer
a lot of questions.
