Bike Station

a network of automated bicycle rental machines for transportation and recreation use.

The Bike Station Network will operate hundreds of rental bicycles, in major cities as an alternative mode of transportation. The network will allow commuters, for example: to rent a bicycle at the train station and return it at the office building. The goals are to accommodate short trips, reduce automobile pollution, and encourage a healthy and fun activity. Similar projects have been successful in European cities like Copenhagen and Amsterdam.

This is how Bike Station works:

Commuters swipe their credit card or monthly pass into the station. The machine authorizes and registers the transaction, then releases a bicycle. When the commuter returns the bicycle to any Bike Station within the network the card is charged for the rental time, and a receipt is issued. Each Bike Station holds between 10 to 25 specially designed uniform bicycles.
