Following the Attack on America, Legionnaires here and around the country have re-activated a program that served America during the tumultuous years of World War I and World War II. Parkville American Legion Post #183 is providing Blue Star Service Banner Decals to all immediate families of active duty military members, and for the families of the National Guard and Reservists called to active duty from the Parkville Area in support of Liberating Iraq.
The Blue Star Service Banner, created in 1917, was designed to be placed in home windows to show that a family member is serving in the Armed Forces. The program recognizes the contributions and sacrifices of American families, and provides a support network of service member's families, according to Post Commander Bob Manzo. "The Blue Star Service Banner was like a candle in the window for the more than 20 million men and women who served in uniform during those two great wars," he said. "This war on terrorism promises to be full of challenges and may take years to win. The banners remain an appropriate symbol of our nation's support for our armed forces." We will continue distributing the banners honoring the families of active duty military members in the community, and those military reserve families who were affected by call-ups.
We are giving one to residents of the Parkville community and one to Post Family members who have someone currently serving in the military. Additional Banners are sold for our costs of $5.20 each. To date, we have given out 70 Banners to members and residents and sold a total of 82 additional banners.
To receive a Blue Star Banner, families should contact the Post at (410)665-9339.
