Arthur
Lewis (1917-1992)
Arthur
Lewis was Secretary/Treasurer of the area's oldest Go Club, the Greater
Washington Go Club (GWGC), from the mid-1960's until his death in Jan 1992.
During that time, he brought a firm discipline, stability, and reliability to
the key functions of membership and finances. As a result, the GWGC prospered
and grew in influence and reputation. He left to the old timers in the DC Go
community a remembrance of a gentle, yet persuasive man whose no nonsense style
endeared him to one and all. His legacy to the GWGC was a sound and secure
financial foundation. Arthur Lewis was born on Nov 15, 1917 in Mt Vernon, New York. He
graduated cum laude from Harvard with a degree in Political Science. During
World War II, he was part of the American military team that went to England to decipher
the German ENIGMA code. After the war, he and his wife Kathy moved to Washington DC and then to
Wheaton MD where they
raised two daughters, Anne and Susan. He worked for the National Security
Agency until his retirement in the 1970's. His other interests were photography
and the environment, and he made a similar deep impression on the people in
those areas. The Arthur Lewis Go Club is dedicated to the memory of a man who
was deeply appreciated, respected, and beloved by his fellow Go players.
