Section A
The Great Whale River

The Keewaydin  Camp Section A trip of 1999 was the Great Whale River in Northern Quebec.  The Trip started with a 2-and-a-half day bus ride to our drop off spot on a dam, RD-2.  The Roads were built by HydoQuebec for the purpose of daming and exploration of the area.
June 25
As I spent the first night in the bush off the HydroQuebec Road, I recall thinking about the small scragly pines and the lack of decidous trees.
June 26
We spent June 26 preparing for the trip.  Getting our gear ready and adjusting to the weather (40-50 F and constant rain) which would accompany us throught the season.
June 27-June 30
We are making our way towards Lac Bienville.  Most of our travel is through lakes and some current in between the lakes.  (More detail to come)
July 1
We had a half day.  The weather started to warm up a little and the sun poked through so the guide called a half day to dry out our things and just for relaxation.  Bread was made, and many people bathed despite the frigid waters.  I noted in my journal my amazment at how long it stays light.  I was writing my journal at 10:30 with no flashlight or candle.  After we turned in that night we were awakened at about 2:00 AM by wolves howling all around us.  It was very loud and quite eiry.
July 2
After a full day with wakeup at 5:45 we were happy to arrive at our campsite.  The day was mostly lining with some lake paddles in between.
July 3
We had a full day with 1 portage around a rapid.  The rest of the day was rapids, with a large lake after lunch.

A foggy morning at a Cree winter hunting camp.
