APRIL 2002:
Hello Everyone! Here is an update about the book..... it is in process!
and it is happening! It's just taking a long time... I am as
anxious as anyone to see it finished and in my hands...and when it is finished,
it will be beautiful! Thanks so much for your support!
Also.... I wanted to let you know that there is a problem with the Rhythm Women website that was being set up by Stephanie Karpinski last year. She lost her web designer, so she has been unable to go forward with the project. That is why the site is not accessible at this time. If anyone out there would like to assist Stephanie, you can contact her at: coreofbeing@yahoo.com I hope that she is able to get it up and running sometime in the future. In any case, once the book is finished, I will probably put up a site for it with a contact section to be able to contact women listed in the book...along with others. (One project at a time! :) )
I thank you all again for your support and I will be in touch. Thank
you again! MUCH LOVE AND BLESSINGS~!
LETTER SENT TO DRUM BOOK E-MAIL LIST ON - JULY 2, 2001:
Hello Everyone! :)
I hope that all is well with you!
Some of you may have received this information already by regular mail, but
I wanted to reach all of the women who are involved, and for some I only
have e-mail addresses.
First, I want to thank you for your contributions and also thank you for your patience in waiting for this book to be completed. It is going very well, and, as with any process, some new and exciting things have developed!
I’d like to introduce you to a woman drummer who has joined me on this
journey. Her name is Stephanie Karpinski, and she will be handling the
‘Directory’ part of this project. As the book started to come together,
I realized that the directory is organic; ever changing. So, rather than
having it be a part of the actual book, Stephanie has developed the Rhythm
Women Network. This will be a separate publication, which will be updated
on a regular basis. There will be a website, in which you
can post your contact information, website links, events, and make changes
as needed. The book itself, (women’s drum book), has grown to be so
big, that there really isn’t enough room in it to include a full directory.
The Rhythm Women Network will help to free up a lot of space in the book,
so that I can include more of the photos and text that you
submitted. There will be a section in the book on where to find the
directory info about women who are included in the book.....so, it will all
be connected! The Rhythm Women Network will be an on-line way for all
of us to network and to keep information current. There will also be
a printed, hard copy of the directory for those who don’t have internet access......this
publication will be updated, like a phone book!
Below, I will include the letter that Stephanie has written about the Rhythm Women Network, directory and website... Please pass this info on to all the women drummers you know....thanks! :)
This is very exciting! The website will be up before the book is out. This way, we can start the networking process sooner, (something that I wanted to accomplish by producing the book). Now that Stephanie has taken on this part, I am freed up to work on the creative aspects of the project! This all makes sense...and I am grateful for Stephanie’s vision, creativity, help and enthusiasm to get the Rhythm Women Network started! We will be posting updates about the book on the web site also, and it will keep me updated on your contact info so that I can reach you in regards to the book. For now, you can read updates about the women’s drum book on my web site at: http://www.erols.com/jaqui (scroll down on first page and you will see where to click for info on the book)
Thank you again to everyone!!! It is truly a blessing to be involved
with so many amazing and powerful women! You inspire me so much!
I will be in touch soon. Love, light, peace and beautiful music to you!
Peace and Love,
Jaqui MacMillan (see Stephanie's
letter below.....)
Hello!
My name is Stephanie Karpinski. I'm a hand-drummer from Washington,
D.C., and the founder of the Rhythm Women Network website, set to launch on
July 3rd. This site is being built by a woman drummer for women drummers
around the world, as a central place to find out about who is in our drumming
community, where they are, and how they are shaping the drumming world (i.e.
what they're all doing).
Foremost on the new website will be a searchable drumming directory for women
of all levels and interests, from the beginner to women involved in teaching,
educating, facilitating, and healing/music therapy with the drum; women who
create and sell drums and percussion instruments; and women who promote women's
music (production companies, agents, managers,
women-oriented recording labels etc.). Also on the site will be an
event sign-up and listing of women-led and women-centered events(performances,
classes, circles, workshops, festivals, etc.) as well as other drumming events
of interest to women drummers. There will be resource lists for recordings
by women drummers and instructional/educational books/CDs/cassettes/Videos
made by women drummers as learning tools.
Use the Drumming Directory to find a drum circle near you to join or to
plan a trip to another city for a drumming
class or performance. Connect with other women drummers in your area
or across the country and share in your passion for
drumming.
It's now time to raise our drum voices and be heard! Share your know-how and
experience within this all-inclusive
women’s drumming community with the realization that you are supporting a
woman somewhere in the world who is just starting out, meandering along, or
forging ahead on her drum journey. We each have much to teach and learn
on our drumming paths-let the Rhythm Women Network help enable and empower
each of us along the way.
Please check out the site on July 3rd, 2001, at: www.rhythmwomen.org and
sign-up to join the Rhythm
Women Network! AND SPREAD THE WORD — forward this email or printout
and distribute to any female drummer you know!! Thanks and see you on-line!

LETTER SENT TO DRUM BOOK E-MAIL LIST ON - MARCH 23, 2001:
Hello Everyone!
I apologize for taking so long to send you an update on the women's drum
book. I wanted to let you know that it is still being put together....there
is A LOT of material in it and it is taking a long time to put it all into
the computer...but it is happening slowly but surely :) I've experienced
a few computer crashes over the course of doing this and have learned my lesson
very well to save things a little at a time! Two times it crashed and
I lost all the scanned photos! (hours of work!) Now I am saving everything
a little at a time before I move on.... it was a hard lesson! (I actually
have a degree in graphic arts and back when I was in college we hand-pasted
everything...no computers!! It makes me want to do it the old fashioned
way :) ) But it is all working out now and coming together little by
little!
I have also had a few hard "life" things happen that put the project on hold for a few weeks here and there... the death of two friends, friends and family going into the hospital, problems with my house, etc., etc., etc..... life stuff! But I am keeping my head up with a positive attitude and plowing through all this and working on the book with the help of two amazing women who have volunteered their time to do typing and layout stuff!!!! Thank you so much to Tree and Susan!!!! You are life savers!
Some of you are probably wondering where your release forms are? Well, I had to hold off on sending many of them out, because some of you sent me more than one photo and / or written piece, and I am not sure if I will be able to use all of what you sent or just some of it, (it depends on space). So, I have to hold off on sending the release forms until I have more of the layout done. Also, if you haven't received a release form yet and you didn't send a lot of stuff with your package, I may just be waiting, again, to see if I can include your writing AND photo, or just one or the other. I hope this all makes sense! :)
This project has been a very rewarding experience and I give thanks to
each and every one of you who have contributed to it! It is really going
to be something and I can't wait to see it finished! I send you all
love and light, along with peace and blessings! :) Thank you again!
and I will continue to be in touch about the progress...thanks for your patience!
:)
Peace and Love, Jaqui MacMillan

but surely! I have heard from hundreds of amazing women from around
the world! and I can't wait to have this book in my hands! It
will surely be beautiful thanks to all of the wonderful submissions I have
received! Thank you all for your time and efforts.... Please
see the book package below for any newcomers who are interested. And
please note that even though the deadline was in Oct of 1999, I can still
discuss accepting something from you. I have plenty of material at
this time.....but am still looking for some longer written pieces. Thanks
for checking in! I will be in touch about the progress soon! The
next step is to get all of the release forms out and signed. Much love

WOMEN'S DRUM BOOK
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO PRINT THIS OUT AND DISTRIBUTE IT TO ALL WOMEN DRUMMERS THAT YOU KNOW! THANK YOU!!!
Hello Drumming Colleagues!
Thank you very much for taking the time to respond to my search. My name is Jaqui MacMillan, I am a percussionist / performer / teacher in Washington DC. I believe that the idea of women with drums is so beautiful that I have been collecting photos and writings from women drummers in order to put them into a book*. This book will most certainly be published. Therefore, if you do not wish to be included in a national publication, then I thank you for your time and you do not need to read on. If you are interested, I will tell you that this is an exciting networking opportunity for women drummers! The book will be an artistic expression / celebration of women and rhythm, through photos, poems and writings (about drumming) from women drummers all over the world! There will also be a directory listed at the end of the book for those interested in networking, (of course this part is optional if you do not want to be listed). PLEASE NOTE that you do not have to be a professional drummer to be included in this project...drummers of all levels are welcome and encouraged to participate.
If you are interested, I need to receive a package from you no later than October 17, 1999. There will be a creative panel, to choose which photos and writings will be included in the book... therefore, it is very important to send a high quality package! Even if your photo and/or writing are not selected to appear in the book, you can still be listed in the directory (and this is FREE OF CHARGE). The package should include: -A professional quality photo, (black and white preferred), any size (8x10 and smaller) of you with your drum(s). It can be in any setting, as long as it is good quality. -A written paragraph, poem or story from you, (see next page for details). -And an address / information form (for contact info and directory listings).
PLEASE NOTE that your photo does NOT have to be taken by a professional photographer, it simply needs to be of good quality.
If your photo and / or writings are selected to be in the book, release
forms will be sent to you at that time, in order to get your permission to
use the photo and / or what you wrote.
We will be unable to return this package to you, so be sure to have extra
copies of your photo and paragraph available for yourself!
I am truly excited about this project, and when it is finished I am hoping that we will have a huge drum celebration where we can all get together and meet in person! Thank you again for your time and energy! I will let you know how things are going soon.
Love and light and peace and blessings to all of my drum sisters!
Jaqui MacMillan
