Drum For Joy! - Hand Drum Workshops:

“If you can say it, you can play it”…These are the famous words of Jaqui’s first drum teacher, Babatunde Olatunji, and also the foundation for all of her drum classes. In the Drum For Joy! classes you will learn the language of the drum, basic hand drum technique and how to make your drum sing. Jaqui presents the drum songs in a way that make it fun and easy to learn. By building and playing drum compositions in all of their parts, (rhythms, breaks, solos and vocals), you will experience the magic of music making and the joy of drumming in a group! All levels of experience are welcome. From the “beginning beginner” to the advanced player, the Drum For Joy! classes are enjoyable for everyone!  Jaqui specializes in djembe drumming, but other hand drums are welcome, (ashikos, bougaraboos, congas, etc.). Recording and note taking are welcome and encouraged. Participants are asked to bring their drums to class with them.*

*If you need to borrow a drum, please let Jaqui know in advance.

Drum For Joy! - Drum Circles:

A Drum For Joy! drum circle is an interactive experience in which participants use rhythm as a tool to facilitate community, build spirit and promote well being.  In a drum circle, everyone participates by contributing their individual sounds into a spontaneous musical composition.  Individuals develop a common language with the group, which encourages cooperation, creates synergy and develops stronger connections with their peers. It is an activity where anyone can participate at any musical skill level.

Drums and percussion instruments have been used throughout history to make music, communicate across distances and to unite people in celebration.  These instruments produce a wide variety of sounds, allowing for unlimited creativity.  They are easy to learn and enjoyable to play.
From simple fun to stress relief and team building, the benefits of a Drum For Joy! drum circle are numerous.  This activity empowers the participants in a way that allows them to freely express themselves while being supported by the group.  The effects of a drum circle can be inspiring, uniting and long lasting.

Jaqui MacMillan, a professional drum circle facilitator, utilizes a variety of techniques to make the experience fun and meaningful for all participants, while delivering appropriate metaphors for the population in attendance.  Instruments are provided for all participants.
