What is the only parade where you can call the Queen a bitch and no one bats an eye? It's the Krewe of Barkus. "All hail Queen Pasha," that was the cry at the Three Dog Bakery on Royal Street as the Mystic Krewe of Barkus crowned Queen Barkus VIII for its parade scheduled for the afternoon of Feb. 27, 2000. Queen Pasha, about 8 months old, was found in a brown paper bag when she was seven or eight weeks old. Terry Barber adopted her out of the "And Toto, too" pet store. Barber said she was scared and shy when he first took her home, but she has since warmed up to him. Along to greet the new queen was Grand Duchess Myrna, the daughter of King Barkus III. Myrna was "resplendent in a golden crown and cape that draped smartly over her imposing Bulldog body." Myrna will ride in a float with a golden stallion, designed by students from the Tulane University School of Architecture. The main requirement for being crowned Queen is a recent adoption from the LASPCA. From there the contestants are nominated and selected by a panel of judges.
