Duke University's Learn on Your Own. Duke University offers academically
talented students the opportunity to take accelerated courses in their
hometowns. Courses currrently offered are "English Language: Use and Origin,"
"Reflective Writing," "Microeconomics," and "Precalculus Mathematics," which

Florida Department of Correspondence and Distance Education. More than
40 high school courses are available through correspondence, and six are

Indiana University Division of Extended Studies. Accredited college and
high school courses offered using distance learning, Internet, email, video,
CD-ROM, and correspondence.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Independent Study High School. Students
may enroll in undergraduate college courses for credit as well as take the
offered high school courses, which include courses in the fields of
agriculture, art, business, career planning, computer science, driver
education, English, family and consumer science, industrial education,
languages, mathematics, music, photography, science, social studies, and study
skills. Courses in English, for example, include The American Short Story, The
Short Story, Basic Expository Writing, Basic Grammar, Intermediate Grammar,
Effective Reader Skills, General Literature, Multicultural Literature, Writing
a Research Paper, and an English course for each grade level 9-12.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Independent Study High School has developed
an online course management system, which they call Way Cool. Students submit their work online. Graded comments are posted on Way Cool, where students can read instructional comments.
More than 50 courses are offered online. It is possible for a student to earn his or her high school diploma entirely online. The school offers a general diploma program and a college preparatory diploma program.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Office of Extended Education and Outreach
provides lifelong learning opportunities to people in all 93
counties of Nebraska, all 50 states, and more than 125 countries.

NDCDE is sponsored by the state of North Dakota. It is regionally accredited through the North
Central Association of Colleges and Schools and is the fourth largest high
school member of the University Continuing Education Association. Students
can earn a high school diploma through NDCDE.
NDIS enrolls students in all 50 states and many foreign countries.

Texas Tech University. High school students may enroll in undergraduate
college courses for credit as well as take the offered high school courses,
which include courses in the fields of accounting, agriculture, algebra,
biology, business, child development, computer science, correlated language
arts, economics, English, family studies, fine arts and art studies, food and
nutrition studies, French, geometry, health education, journalism, Latin, law
and legal studies, mathematics, music, peer counseling, physical education, and
physical science.

University of Wisconsin-Extension. The Independent Learning Program of
the University of Wisconsin-Extension offers nearly 600 correspondence courses,
including ones for high school students, enrolling almost 13,000 students each
year. High school courses are offered in the areas of art and art history,
astronomy, biology, business and economics, English, French, geography, German,
health, history, Latin, mathematics, meteorology, music, physics, Polish,
political science, Russian, social studies, Spanish, and study skills.

University of Missouri. The university offers regular correspondence
courses such as Readings in the Short Story. Email to

University of Vermont. The University of Vermont's Distance Learning
Network offers advanced placement courses to high school students in Vermont.
Sites for receiving the courses are all currently in-state, but they are
planning to expand coverage outside Vermont.
California Migrant Education Portable Assisted Study Sequence. This
program, begun in 1978, is primarily for students who move from school to school
during the school year.

Jefferson County High School. As of September, 1995, the Jefferson
County, Colorado, High School program and/or curriculum materials were being
used in 131 school districts/agencies in 19 states. In 1996 Jefferson County
High School began operating an independent-study office, providing
opportunities for students to meet their needs through independent-study work
by correspondence.
They also offer online courses. Students participate in numerous group
interactions online real-time with other students, their teachers, and mentors

LetterLinks. The Center for Talent Development at Northwestern
University sponsors LetterLinks Program for academically talented students.
"The program provides two options for distance learning: the Center's
LetterLinks courses in mathematics, social sciences, and the humanities for
students in six through twelfth grade and the LetterLinks/EPGY on-line math
courses for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. The
LetterLinks/EPGY courses are offered jointly by the Center for Talent
Development and Stanford University's Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY)
and provide an opportunity for students to participate in completely
computerized mathematics courses that use commonly available personal computer

LetterLinks honors-level courses include Creative Writing, Futuristics,
Introduction to Philosophy, Latin, Literary Analysis, Geography and the Modern

courses include Economics, European History, Language and Composition, U.S.
History, Literature and Composition, and Art History.
LetterLinks/EPGY mathematics courses include K-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, Beginning
Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, Precalculus, Calculus A, Calculus B, and
Calculus C.
The Center for Talent Development has been accredited as a "Special Function
School" by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Phoenix Special Programs and Academies. Phoenix Special Programs
originated in 1926 as a correspondence school. In 1969 it became chartered by
the state of Arizona as a private non-profit organization. It now serves over
10,000 school-aged youth and adults throughout the world, offering
correspondence classes leading toward a high school diploma. It is accredited
by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
