The Laurel Branch of AAUW

Who We Are

The Laurel Branch of AAUW was formed in 1953. Throughout its history,  the Branch has been active in the community. It started an adult  education program at Laurel High School. In 1996, the branch was a  co-founding organizational sponsor of the Friends of the Laurel Library.

The Branch sponsors the Margaret Myerly Award which is given annually  to a graduating senior at Laurel High School. It was established in  memory of Margaret Myerly, an active member of AAUW, who taught math  at Laurel High School for 40 years. The first award was given to  Christopher Charles Prestel in 1983.

The National Association and Maryland AAUW have recognized the Laurel Branch for the dedication and achievement of branch members and  its strong commitment to accomplishing the AAUW mission of  education and equity for all women and girls.

About AAUW

Mission statement:   AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.

Since 1881 the American Association of University Women has been the nation's leading voice promoting education and equity for women and girls.  AAUW is composed of two corporations:

    * The Association— with more than 100,000 members, 1,000 branches, and 550 college/university institution partners nationwide — advocates education and equity. Since its founding in 1881, members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day — educational, social, economic, and political. Our commitment to our mission is reflected in our public policy efforts, programs, Leadership and Training Institute, and diversity initiatives. AAUW's work extends globally through its international connections.

    * The AAUW Educational Foundation is the world's largest source of funding exclusively for graduate women. Each year the Foundation provides about $4 million in fellowships, grants, and awards for outstanding women around the globe and for community action projects. The Foundation also funds pioneering research on women, girls, and education.

    * The AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund, a program of the AAUW Educational Foundation, is the nation's largest legal fund focused solely on sex discrimination in higher education. The Legal Advocacy Fund provides funds and a support system for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination in higher education.

In principle and practice, AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership. There shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, or class.
