CRITICAL WOMEN’S ISSUES IN OUR COUNTYTODAY

August 2003

The Member Organizations of the Women’s Action Coalition of Prince George’s County, Maryland, have identified the following issues as most critical for women and girls in our county.The issues are listed in rank order, with the top issue first.

1. Prince George’s County Commission for Women (CFW) – appoint the full complement of Commissioners, adequate staffing to address County women’s issues, inclusion in related initiatives by the County Government and agencies, and funding adequate to carry out all of the components of the Commission’s mission and charges and enable the PGCFW to fully serve the women and girls of our county.

2. Appointment of Women on All County Boards and Commissions – receive recommendations from WAC and its member organizations of women of diverse ages, racial, ethnic and religious groups, and women with disabilities to assure that  ALL County  Boards and Commissions include equitable representation of women and girls.

3. Domestic Violence – coordinate with WAC and the CFW to support County programs and integrated initiatives, including the FamilyCrisis Center.

4. Educational Equity – assure the full implementation of Title IX and other Federal and State mandates for gender equity and other areas of educational equity; collaborate with WAC and the Prince George’s County Public Schools to achieve comprehensive equity throughout our schools for students, staff and communities.

5. Prejudice Reduction/ Intergroup Understanding – e.g. The Building Bridges program formerly conducted by the County Commission  for Women.

6. Health Care – provide access to and quality of care for women and girls of all socioeconomic levels and in all regions of the County.

7. Child Care/Early Childhood Programs – maintain and expand quality programs for the care and education of young children throughout the County.

8. Sexual Assault and Community Violence – integrate strategies to prevent sexual assault and gender-specific violence into County programs aimed at reducing violence and increasing public safety; support programs for the victims of sexual assault; provide programs for the perpetrators of sexual assault and domestic violence.

9. Employment Discrimination – monitor and eliminate employment discrimination, including pay equity, based upon gender or a combination of gender, race, language, disability

10. Older Women – collaborate with the area agency on aging to provide services, employment and other programs for the increasing number of older women, who are disproportionately represented among the senior citizens in the County.

11. Affordable Housing – create additional affordable housing for women of low and/or fixed incomes and for female-headed households.

12. Women with Disabilities – ensure access and full participation for women and girls with disabilities.

13. Transportation – establish a more integrated system of transportation throughout  Prince George ’s County to increase potential for employment, medical care, etc

14. Women and the Criminal Justice System – develop preventive programs and interventions; increase educational programs for incarcerated women and girls

15. Homeless Women – strengthen crisis, transitional and long-term services for the growing number of homeless women and homeless families with children.

16. Immigrant Women – the growing number of immigrant women and girls in Prince George’s County have unique needs that must be met now
