DAVE's PARTS FOR THE DISCONTINUED HOMEPAGE
The early Plymouth/Dodge
273 LA engine was not noted as a major performance motor;
however, the 4 barrel version, rated at 235 HP (275 HP in
'66 with options), was a decent performer. This AFB carb'ed 273 (called
the "273 Commando" by Plymouth) used a unique
10.5:1 compression, forged piston that is no longer available
from MOPAR or TRW/Federal Mogul.
Because of the difficulty in obtaining
usable forgings many owners of the early Formula S Barracuda/Dart GT
are forced to order custom pistons ($600.00 to $800.00)
or use the 8:1 castings available from MOPAR
(Kantor advertises these for $40.00 each!). The reason for
the existence of this web page is to check the level of interest in either
reproducing a close copy of the Commando Forging or, perhaps, developing a
zero deck height, single valve relief, flat top forging that would yield
about 10:1 compression without excessive deck and/or head milling.
The idea is, that if there is enough interest
in rebuilding these engines to run the way that Mother MOPAR intended, maybe
we can get together a large enough order of pistons to "Buy Down"
the cost.
