December 2007 My Daffodil Friends,
NE NC Daffodil Society
The 2007 season has come to a close and the 2008 season is ahead of
us as I write this note. The American
Daffodil Society's (ADS) 2008 National Daffodil Convention is coming
to Richmond, VA and will held in mid April 2008. It's worthy to plan a trip to
the National Daffodil Show and it's garden tours planned are fantistic. 2007 was my eleventh year in daffodils and was the year that Fran and I
founded the new Northeast North
Carolina Daffodil Society centered in Currituck County, NC. Currituck is a
native American word for "Place of the Wild Geese." From this location we can
serve five counties in the Northeast NC area. There is an outstanding interest
in gardening in this area and a County Extension Agent that if truly interested
in helping new plant socieities. With the County Extension Agent and the Master
Gardener Volunteers of Currituck, I feel we have a chance to get this off the
ground and hopefully self sustaining in a few years. We received a lot of support this first year and was able to establish a good
membership base; support the Currituck Flower and Garden show with an exhibit of
show daffodils; and hold a mini-competition for the youth group. Our fall meeting
and bulb exchange was a big success with over 17 attendees. Clay was able to get
a large collections of bulbs from his own digging and a couple of local garden centers
so that the people that showed up at the fall meeting went away with a nice assortment of
show quality daffodil bulbs. We have our first show scheduled for March 22nd, 2008 at the New Currituck County
Extension Facility on route 158 in Barco, NC. We are requesting all interested
in Daffodils to bring their "cut" daffodils to the show and enter them before 9:00 am
that Saturday morning. A mini seminar on showing daffodils will be held at a
date yet to be determined and on Friday night at the show location. Additional
help in identifing daffodils and staging for the show will be available on Saturday
morning. After the judging of the show from 9:30am to 1:00pm the show will be open and
free to the public for viewing. The show hall hours for public
viewing will be from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Saturday, March 22, 2008. We hope to see everyone at the 2008 ADS National Daffodil Convention
and Show. Thank you.
