The Unicorn Mountain Railway railway was an ongoing garden railway "experiment" that lasted for 12 years. During it's lifetime it grew from a small loop of LGB sectional track in a custom built flowerbox to a large radius of track that circumnavigates the perimeter of the yard.

The early design of the railway was to build a garden of miniature varieties of plants to enhance the rail line and allow for maintenance at a comfortable height. The raised flower box is the starting point for ten years of landscaping that turns an otherwise useless slope of grassy land into a enhancing backdrop for the railway. All of the plantings on the slope of land behind the railway has been designed to allow for larger plants furthest from the railway to add a sense of scale depth to the mainline.

Motive power on the U.M.R.R. began as track power, but soon gave way to live steam and gas-electric diesel locomotives. There was no specific scale assigned to the railway and this issue was resolved based on whatever scale of train is in operation at the time.
You will see American and British outline mainline locomotives in operation under live steam or gas power and smaller narrow gauge geared locomotives trundling around the railway.

All of this has been on big enjoyable experiment as Scott and Jeni plan their final garden railway that will be built at another location in the future. But for now, we continue to play and learn and enjoy gardening on the Unicorn Mountain Railway.
