What is the GeesePeace in Fairfax Project?  purplegoose.jpg (24817 bytes)

GeesePeace in Fairfax is an exciting pilot project involving a public/private partnership to reduce the nuisance aspect of Canada geese in Fairfax County through humane, non-controversial, wildlife management practices and technology innovation.

Canada geese, growing at a rate of approximately 15% - 20% a year, are increasingly becoming a nuisance to Fairfax County residents. While some specific associations, parks and government agencies have individually tried to solve the problem on their own properties, no comprehensive effort has taken place to research, evaluate and solve the problem on a county wide basis.

Because Canada geese are not confined to one property (that is they may feed on a golf course, nest on private property and then spend the night on a private pond) individual property owners cannot solve the problem on their own. However, with a comprehensive, long-term strategy for reducing the birth rate of resident Canada geese, Fairfax County holds the promise of not only getting the problem under control, but of leading the nation in a humane wildlife management project that will set the standard for future community action.
