"Mountaineering
expresses the desire to achieve a higher purpose through strength,
perseverance, and willingness to endure hardship."

Quotes and
Drawings |
You know you're a mountaineer when you....
...would rather be
gasping for air, flexing ice-cold toes, and hanging on for your life, than
lying comfortably at the beach
...have spent
more on your Goretex climbing parka than on your best business suit.
...know by heart
the main route on five or more major summits
...realize your
ice-axe makes a great weed tool in your lawn
...spend your
lunch hour training in the stairwell of your office with a 70lb backpack
...know that even
one of those guys you climb with means more to you than all your other friends
and neighbors combined
Mount Rainier, WA 14,410 ft |
My drawing of Mt. Rainier from Paradise. My 50th State highpoint! The wildflowers were glorious at the lower elevations. Our route to Camp Muir took us towards Gibraltar Rock, seen here on the skyline on the right side of Rainier. |
"Before the climb…with single-minded
purpose, you train-- eat, drink, and breathe the mountain...
During the climb… the magnificent duality!
Hardships and pain demand
immediate physical response,
Beauty and grandeur evoke
immediate spiritual response...
After the climb… thoughts return to lofty
summits, soaring over crags and cliffs, but in the end, it's the fellowship
that endures."
Granite Peak , MT 12,799 ft. |
Granite Peak, MT as it appeared from our high camp near the Southeast side of Avalanche Lake, below Froze to Death Plateau. We called our campsite, "Rodents' Roost." This small, grassy hollow, amid a sea of boulders, had mice, picas, and marmots that delighted in trying to steal our food. If you look closely, you can make out our two tents guyed down against fierce winds. |
"Well, now,
the mountain's NOT going to come to US!......Shaaaaad-up!"
Borah Peak, ID 12,662 ft
What a beautiful steep rock and snow climb, crowned by perfect weather during my first climb (Jul 95)! Don Mercer and I went on from here to climb Gannett Peak, WY. I returned to Borah (Aug 99) |

May 96--At the summit of Boundary Peak, Nevada's highest point. Referring to Montgomery Peak (behind me in the photo), one weary highpointer made the following entry in the summit register, "I'm sure glad that other one is in California!" |
|||
July 96-- At the top of Mount Hood, Oregon, 11,239 ft. (2nd Time). Much better weather this time around |
|||
Jan 97--New Year's Day, El Pico de Orizaba. First light casts long shadows of our rope team (r. to l.) Andy, Chuck, Steve, and Tom. I turned to take this shot.

Jan 97--New Year's Day, El Pico de Orizaba. Gasping for air, I turned and snapped this photo very near the summit.

Aug 97--Goats with an attitude--Granite Peak, Montana. Well, we were camping in their living room! With Don Mercer and Don and Kathy Youssef (not shown). Our camp, this time, was at the north end of Avalanche Lake.

June 98-- Little Bear and the infamous connecting ridge, seen from the summit of Blanca Peak. Remote Blanca Peak is Colorado's third highest 14er. With Andy Brolin.
|
|||
June 98-- Andy and me at the summit of Blanca, 14,345 ft. This was a significant early season snow climb. After gale-force winds the day before on Wheeler Peak, this gorgeous weather was sweet!
|
|||
June 98-- The "Raw Bean" at the summit of Old Rag, Shenandoah National Park. My daughter, Robin (10) is a natural-born climber. At 3,268 ft above sea level, Old Rag is not tall by Western standards, but the 2,000 ft altitude gain is nothing to sneeze at! |
|||
July 98--Yosemite with my daughter, Erin. My panoramic photo of Half Dome from near Glacier Point. Nevada Falls (above) and Vernal falls (below) are clearly visible and were absolutely magnificent this year! |
|||
July 98--Yosemite. With my daugher, Erin (13) posed here near Nevada Falls. Heavy snow made the falls breathtaking, but brought lots of mosquitoes to Little Yosemite Valley. Erin and I ascended the intimidating cables on the North face, and together, we summited Half Dome on this 3-day backpack. |
|||
Aug 98--Boundary Peak (my 3rd time) reunion climb. Left to right back row: Don Mercer, Steve Packer, Karen Seelhoff, Andy Brolin, and Chuck Bonning. Left to right front row: David Pomeroy, Willie, Blaine Smith |

Aug 98--Andy approaches the awesome East face of Mt. Whitney, 14,494 ft, via the Mountaineers Route. We're approaching the Moraine pictured in the topo map background of this page. (See note at bottom) |
|||
Aug 98--With Andy at the summit of Mt. Whitney. "Now you boys, don't forget your jacket...it gets cold up there." |
|||
Sept 98-- Colorado's Mt. Pomeroy, 13,329 ft.--Rugged and remote. With a name like this, I HAD to climb it! After a couple of years of planning, I made it my final climb of the season, solo. |
|||
Sept 98--180 degree panoramic view from the summit of Mt. Pomeroy showing Pomeroy Lake and the gorgeous mountain cirque, below. Pieced together from 4 separate photos. |

Sept 98--Pom on Pom. |

Via the

climb with a partner from the Colorado Mountain School, but we waited in

By 3:30am I decided to go it on my own. Made it to about 13,000 ft., but hit black ice on the North

made it back to the car before a very bad storm. |

Feeling fit
now, and ready to go. Day one: hiked to Hornlihutte, ate lunch, roped, and
continued up. Plagued by fog &
sleet, nonetheless made to the Steine Schlague, before weather worsened and
pushed us back. Made right choice
though—others who continued that day, never came back! Our summit push (next
day), again, fouled by weather. All
of us could have made summit, if only weather had cooperated…well, that’s

Raced to

up MB du Tacul as a warm-up. Cold and
very steep, but clear in the morning.
Hit by small avalanche 2/3 up, 100’ above a shrund. It came without warning. Lucky to survive. Continued anyway. At crest, weather worsened, so we
descended to Cosmique Hut for the night.

Looked like
weather would be on my side for this full moon climb. Ascended to Helen Lake, first day, bivouacked,
but woke to dense fog. Headed up
anyway; hours later, break in clouds revealed I was way off course. With each hour rockfall was getting
worse—becoming a bowling alley.
Debated going on. A second
break in clouds allowed a compass fix on camp, and a safe return. |

gorgeous scenery! Steep old growth climb to tree line. Camped on pristine
snow field with pesky marmots that ate the strap of my helmet. Summit day:
roped glacier then rock climbing took way longer than planned. Clouds and
