Planning DetailsPurpose: To focus attention on the negative aspects of violent play and to model play activities that promote affirmative, cooperative, non-violent play. Background: Programs to accomplish the Purpose described above have been on-going in Columbia over the past four years, as sponsored by Columbia United Christian Church (CUCC) as part of Focus on Peace Week. In 1998, Running Brook Elementary School (RB) and it's PTA, joined with CUCC in sponsoring these events for the Rimning Brook Elementary School community. In the three previous years, CUCC organized and carried out these programs as pan of its community outreach activities. Planning: Fran D., Principal of Worthington Elementary School and a member of CUCC, was instrumental in bringing the two communities together. An exploratory meeting was held at Running Brook with School Administrators and CUCC representatives. An overview of CUCC's experience in organizing and conducting these events in 1995 through 1997 was presented. Following discussion and expressions of interest, plans for a follow-up meeting were made. Materials were left for review and further consideration. Subsequent meetings were held in developing a program based on the CUCC model, modified to meet the needs of Running Brook Agreements were reached in sharing responsitilities for:
