CornerStone Institute (CSI) offers training in skills and has three directions:

  1. Marriage Preparation Counseling (MPC) is an annual weekend workship training couples to do premarital counseling under their local pastor. What makes this program unique is the articulation and teaching of three fundamental mentoring skills, which enable the mentoring couple to cultivate their realationship with the engaged couple and personalize the content provided. A brochure is available. This will be offered again on March 27-30, 1998. The motto is Cultivating marriages that honor Christ. We have trained 35 couples in about 15 churches over the past several years. Most are doing the work and everyone (trained couples, pastors and newlyweds) is pleased.

  2. Relationship-based Parenting is a skill focused workshop for parents of teenagers. Parenting teens involves mentoring. The emphasis shifts from training children to live within parental boundaries by enforcing consequences, to walking alongside teens leading them to follow willingly because of relational influence and trust. This program is unique because it artiuclates three fundamental skills to cultivate a relationship and a number of categories of things to listen for in their teen's heart, so that the parents may understand what's happening deep inside their teen. A Manual for parenting teenagers will be available by the end of this month. The motto is Leading teens into adulthood relying on Christ, which contains the double-entendre of the parents and the grown teens relying on Christ.

  3. CornerStone Institute will offer practical training in relationship-based Christian counseling and psychotherapy skills for lay leaders, church leaders and trained clinicians. The interns will be supervised while they are providing service, at a reduced fee, for clients screened and referred by pastors of supporting churches. Just as Jesus worked with two people on the road to Emmaus, our counseling approach walks alongside another person, while God transforms images deep in the heart. This enables repentance and forgiveness, so that more and more he or she might enjoy God and reflect Christ in fruitful service. The motto is Training in Relationship-based Christian Counseling and Psychotherapy Skills.
