.Karen Whilden, a teacher at Baltimore Judo Club, and Diane Jackson, a teacher at Hui-O Judo Club, represented the USA in Havana at the Cuban Olympics. This year was the first year in which Kata, specifically Nage No Kata, was included. Karen and Diane placed first out of four teams. The other Kata teams were all Cuban. Congratulations on a Kata well performed.
A report by Diane Jackson
Karen Whilden, a teacher at Baltimore Judo Club, and Diane Jackson, a teacher at Hui-O Judo Club, represented the Pan American Judo Union and the USA, their clubs, Maryland, Virginia and Shufu Judo Yudanshakai at the first Kodokan Judo Kata International Tournament held October 25-29, 2007 at the Kodokan in Tokyo, Japan. This tournament included competition in Nage No Kata and Katame No Kata, practice forms which teach competition skills, and Ju No Kata and Kime No Kata, forms which teach self defense. Each Judo union in the world and Japan named 2 to 3 teams for competition in each Kata. The Pan American Judo Union included 4 teams from the USA, 2 teams from Brazil and 1 team from Canada. Diane and Karen Performed Katame No Kata and placed 9th. Japan captured gold and silver in all Kata while Spain's teams took home 3rd in all Kata and Italy placed 4th in all Kata. It was a great achievement to be named to this first-ever history making event and to compete against the best in the world at the Kodokan.
I would have never believed someone if they told me that I would compete at the Kodokan representing the USA and PJU. I expected the Kodokan would host a top quality tournament, but they did it with unbelievable friendliness, style, and apparent ease. It was also a learning experience. The Kodokan was looking for things in the Kata, especially in style, that we did not do. The teams that performed the best train at the Kodokan every year. What a luxury that would be! The Kodokan held seminars after the tournament that were enlightening. I met Kata players from all over the world and affirmed a universal Judo truth: Judo players are nice people. While we, the US team, were using our collective Kata knowledge to work on changes after the tournament and 2 players from Spain, who placed 3rd, came into the hallway to work on Kata with us.

Dear Friends & Supporters of Judo:
I am trying to create a list for the purpose of connecting certified Public School teachers who are practicing Judo and/or who have started a Judo Club at their school, whether it is elementary or secondary. Rank is not an issue.
If anyone knows a teacher who wants to start a program or knows anyone who is doing Judo and not a certified teacher but wants to start a club at a primary or secondary school.
If anyone at a university or community college would be interested in being part of a program to attract certified public school teachers in order to develop Judo in public schools.
Please forward your/their name, address, phone, and email to me.
Yours in Judo,
Drew Wickham

Judo is an international and olympic sport. Originally Judo was derived from JuJitsu. Jujitsu is a form of control that uses punches, kicks, blocks, wrist-locks, leg-locks, throws, pins, arm-locks and strangles. As a fighting form it is very effective, but as a sport or a form of physical education it had one problem. A lot of practice partners were damaged during the learning process. Jigoro Kano studied the various schools of Jujitsu, and wanted to create a form of exersise that would help to strengthen mind and body like Jujitsu but would also be surviveable. Judo is the result. It involves the practice of throws, pins, strangles and arm-locks. Much of the more dangerous forms used in Jujitsu are still in Judo but only in Kata form. Beside the physical practice of techniques, Judo encompasses moral teachings and fostering the belief that Judo should be used only for defense and for the mutual welfare and benefit of the community.
| The most complete book written about Judo is still Kodokan Judo, written by Jigoro Kano. Kodokan Judo includes a brief history and etiquette as well as the throws, pins, armlocks, strangles and counters for these techniques and it contains descriptions of the seven Kata of the Kodokan. This book is available from www.amazon.com by clicking on the logo to the right. |
