Thanks to some | census info I received from a generous genealogist from Canada, I've confirmed | that Elizabeth Madden did indeed have a twin. The family "lore" also | indicated that her sister married a "Campbell". I was able to find | information confirming this. On the marriage record for Patrick McGovern and | Elizabeth Madden, the witnesses listed are Jeremiah Campbell and Jeanie | Campbell. Could this be a coincidence...? I think not... A little | more digging uncovered the marriage record for Jeanie Madden and Jeremiah Campbell. | Witnesses for that marriage were none other than Patrick McGovern and Elizabeth | Madden! Go to the Madden page I've created for more info. | | The other information I was able to gather from the records I downloaded from | www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk was... | | Elizabeth Maddens father's name was: John Madden (Spirit dealer) | and was deceased by 1883. | Elizabeth Maddens mother's name was: Sarah Henry - she then remarried a | a Campbell - possibly related to Jeremiah | Campbell mentioned above. | | Based on the US census information I obtained, | Patrick McGovern left Ireland and went to Scotland. Around 1887 he, his wife | Elizabeth and their two children came to the United States - possibly separately. | I found an 1888 passenger list with a 27 year old Patrick McGovern, a 3 year old | John McGovern along with a 16 year old Margaret Kelly (my current theory is | that she was Pat's cousin since his mother's maiden name was Kelly - he brought | her along to watch little John while he went out and found work). I found it | odd that she was listed between Patrick and John on the passenger list. It is | still not known why he originally went to Scotland. It's possible that Patrick | McGovern went to Scotland looking for work (there was more industry in Scotland | and, therefore, more work opportunities for unskilled labor - he's listed as an | "Iron Furnaceman" on the marriage record - which means he shovelled coal into a | furnace all day!). Maybe he didn't want to be a farmer like his father. It's | possible that there was a famine on the farm forcing him to seek work in Scotland | - although there was no serious potato famine in the 1870s and 1880s. The great | Irish potato famine was in the 1840s. It appears that Elizabeth was born in | Scotland based on the recently aquired information from Scotland.
