Fall Proved Fatal
George W. Carpenter, Former Franklin Resident, Killed by Fall From Cherry Tree

Franklin County Relatives and friends were shocked at news of the death of George W. Carpenter, former Franklin resident, who was killed by a fall from a cherry tree at Edison, Nebr., last Thursday morning. the deceased lived here years ago,on the farm now owned by C. H. Castor, and had many friends here who were pained to hear of his sudden death. He had relatives at Hildreth and the following account of the fatal accident and obituary is furnished to us by our Hildreth reporter:

Mrs. Bert Anderson of Hildreth and her sister, Mrs. Oscar Davis of Wauneta, Nebr., who was visiting here were called to Edison, Nebr., Thursday morning b the news that their brother, George William Carpenter, of Edison, had met this death by falling from a cherry tree and sustaining a broken neck.

They drove at once to Edison, accompanied by their nephew, Murl Anderson of Hildreth. Another sister, Mrs. Ernest Anderson, and Mr. Anderson, were on a fishing trip and vacation in the west part of the state, but were located Thursday evening and returned to Edison immediately.

Details of the accident are meager, as a daughter, Miss Wilma Carpenter, who was also picking cherries in the same tree, heard nothing until she saw her father fall, and he made no outcry or motion after he struck the ground.

Mr. Carpenter was 61 years, 11 months old, and leaves a wife and seven grown children. Three children, two boys and one girl, preceded him in death. Those remaining are Mrs. Mae Mason of Long Island, Kas.; Mrs. Thelma Booker, Omaha; Misses Pearl and Wilma Carpenter, Edison, and Earl, Henry and Kenneth, also of Edison.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church at Oxford, after which the body was brought to Franklin for interment beside the remains of his two children who had preceded him. Services at Franklin were in charge of the Masonic order, Sunday.[Edison Sentinel]
