Civil War historian Brian Pohanka is searching for a picture of John Lamar, Colonel of the 61st Georgia to include in a treatment of the battle of Monocacy he is preparing for the National Park Service. Lamar was killed leading his troops in fierce fighting that produced a Confederate victory but bought Union forces enough time for reenforcements to reach and save the nation's capitol from Jubal Early's small army. Lamar is buried at Rose Hill Cemetary at Macon, Georgia. If you have a picture of Col. Lamar that you are willing to share or can refer us to one, please contact Chris Brantley.
This page represents the early stages of research for what I hope will be the definitive treatment of the Lawton-Gordon-Evans Brigade and its service during the American Civil War. In addition to highlighting the major events, I want this book to convey the personal nature of the war as experienced by the soldiers who served in the Brigade. To that end, I would greatly appreciate anyone who is willing to share (or can point me to) original source material (e.g. diaries, journals, letters, manuscripts, newspaper accounts, etc.) and will acknowledge your contribution in the book.
Questions, comments, suggestions, and requests for and/or offers of information are welcome. Contact Chris Brantley at brant@erols.com or at c.brantley@ieee.org.
