| History:
The Deaf Adoption News Service (DANS), a special interest
group of the World Federation of the Deaf, began with a handful
of e-mail subscribers in early 1994. A website was started
in 1995. For over a decade, DANS carried listings of waiting
deaf and hard of hearing children internationally. Today,
the "DANS list" of waiting children no longer exists
as I decided to stop carrying listings, but the popular DeafHOH-Adoption
discussion list it spawned, lives on and thrives.
Prospective Families:
The best way to find out about currently available waiting
deaf and hard of hearing children is to subscribe to the DeafHOH-Adoption
discussion list. This list is for families that have adopted
deaf children or that are in the process of adopting deaf/hoh
children.
The DeafHOH-Adoption list also has downloadable files (accessed
by clicking "Files" in the left navigation of Yahoo Groups)
for list members that cover the following topics:
- How to Adopt a Deaf Child
- Communication Options
- Abbreviations and Terms
Coming Soon:
The spirit of the former Deaf Adoption News Service lives on in the DeafAdoption.Org
website. I am not
handling this site; after running DANS for 12 years, I decided
it was time to pass the mantle of deaf adoption advocate on
to other people.
